Longwood is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,368 at the 2010 census. Longwood is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Longwood was James Witherspoon in 1824. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Miami River about one mile from where modern-day Longwood stands today. At that time, there were no roads or schools in Monroe County and most residents relied on horseback transportation to get to their destinations. By 1830, Witherspoon had moved his family to what is now Sunrise Drive and began planting corn, beans and other crops near present-day Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1836, James Witherspoon's son John married Mary Ann McConnell who had come from nearby Sanford with her husband Jefferey McConnell (a Revolutionary War veteran). They raised six children here: four sons and two daughters who would grow up into families of their own; John Witherspoon Jr., James Tatum III, Martha Jane Pritchard and Sarah Jane Driscoll (later Mrs. William Hinchcliffe). In 1840, when Florida became an official U.S. state, Longwood's only neighbor – Sanford – decided to become its capital city so he erected a large courthouse downtown which still stands today as one of the few remaining examples of architecture from that era in Orange County.
