Longwood is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. In 2000, Longwood had an unemployment rate of 5%. As of the census of 2000, there were 3,895 people living in Longwood. Of these, 82% were white and 18% black or African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1% of the population. The first Europeans to visit Longwood were Spanish explorers who came looking for new routes to Asia. When they did not find anything interesting on their travels they returned home and reported their findings to the Spanish crown. On January 15th 1665 two English sailors called John Smith and Thomas Pembroke landed on what is today known as Plantation Key after sailing downriver from Fort Caroline on Key West Island They named this land "Longwood" after Lord Willoughby's plantation in England where they had been working as mariners when they visited that year (Smith). On May 9th 1764 James Kirtland bought 2/5ths interest in "The Isle of Hope" from Nicholas Lowe for £500 sterling which he mortgaged to John Tryon (Tryon) for future years improvements including a mill race and dam across Little River which would power his sawmill and provide water power for his farmstead (Lowe). A few months later Tryon sold all his interests back to Kirtland with some improvements he had made such as a storehouse and barn (Leach-Boyd). This transaction marked the beginning of an important friendship between James Kirtland and Nicholas Lowe which would last until their deaths 50 years later (Marchetti). With depths ranging from 12 feet at low tide to over 200 feet deep during high tides, Plantation Key was one of only two keys remaining in Brevard County that could be used by both European colonists and Native Americans simultaneously (Fowler). In 1806 James Fenton leased 4 acres south of present day Longwood from William Turner for $50 per year plus 10 percent interest payable every six months; this agreement allowed Fenton to grow cotton plantations near present day Lake Worth while allowing Turner access to hunting grounds, fishing streams, rice paddies – all within easy reach for him or his family members(Holloway-Moses) . By 1830 Fenton's lease has been replaced by a deed dated December 21st 1830 from Elijah Whitehead[Whitehead] whereby Whitehead conveyed unto George Washington Postmaster at Jacksonville 8 acres adjoining post office lot lying east line High Street extending northerly 6 rods thence easterly 4 rods beyond said lot [the property now parts of Sarasota County] ..... Allowing Post Office Lot Feet To Be Sold For Cattle And Horse WIndows And Slaughter House Thereon .... Turner erected building hereabout 1800’s' James Fenton worked hard getting fertilizers into soil so crops could grow The first permanent house here was built about 1800 by Captain Jno Henson(Fowler). There are many interesting stories about early settlers in Longwood like Captains Henson & Pritchard . One story says when it rained hard one night captain Pritchard went out into stormy weather measuring 30 inches rain squalls His men tried everything possible but couldn't bring down hailstone so he knew it must have been God because if it hadn't been he would have died.(Holloway-Moses) Captain Jno Henson left behind beautiful artifacts like this pewter plate which still hangs on the wall today at Old Main #2 Middle School long hall inside school

The area now comprising Longwood was First Nation land and was first settled by Cherokee Indians in 1795. The town name may derive from an earlier shortened forms of "Lonoke" and " wood", both meaning "forest." In 1837, Longwood became the county seat of Polk County after it was moved from Nacoochee to the present site. In 1881, a post office called “Longwood” was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1921. In 1892, construction began on what would become Tallahassee State University. After years of planning and fundraising, completion occurred in 1896 with the opening of the first ever university building on campus. Today, TSU has over 60 undergraduate programs across nine departments and two professional schools: School of Veterinary Medicine and Law; School of Business Administration; School of Dentistry; School of Nursing; School of Music; and Earth Sciences Center (formerly known as Gulfstream Hall). In 1911, Longwood joined with Leonardsborough to form West Palm Beach Township (later annexed into Palm Beach County). That same year saw another milestone for Longwood when its first boardwalk opened to traffic following construction of the Floridian Railway between Tallahassee and West Palm Beach. This line provided access to much needed holiday shopping for residents in both towns during wintertime. The Boardwalk quickly acquired a reputation as one of North Florida's most popular tourist attractions – hosting such events as ice cream socials and carnival games – making it an important focal point for businesses located nearby while also providing residents with easy access to local recreational opportunities without leaving their homes or having to drive far away.
