Longwood is a town in Putnam County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,458 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of gun hammers began with early settlers in what is now Longwood. One of the first guns used in this area was a hammer that was made from an old axe handle and an iron beam. This tool could be used to beat down nails or other materials to create openings in wood for building purposes. Hammering also became popular among farmers because it allowed them to drive cattle and pigs off their land more easily by pounding them with a hammer instead of using dogs or spears. In 1875, Captain John Pritchard built a sawmill on White Oak Creek near present-day Longwood. This mill produced lumber for buildings and other products such as firearms barrels and stocks. The success of this mill led to further development within the community and soon hammers were being manufactured all over Putnam County by different companies including William Jorgensen’s Sons Manufacturing Company, Wm Cramer & Son’s Company, Henson & Rankin’s Hardware store, Isaac Weems & Bros., Ackerley & Armstrong’s Lumberyard, Warrington Furniture Co., Jordon Lumber Yard, Gadsden Lumber Yard and Odom Brothers Hardware Store). In 1907 Messrs Dawson Bros., Buchanan Bros., Henson Bros., Rankin Bros., Willard Johnson (of Jacksonville), Wm Cramer (of Orlando) started manufacturing pistols at their shop on Orange Blossom Trail just outside of downtown Longwood proper. At that time they were known as “Dawson-Buchanan-Henson-Rankin Pistol Factory” until 1911 when they changed their name to “Orlando Arsenal Arms Factory” because they had become associated with handguns made there rather than rifles only which had been produced before then by other companies located elsewhere in Florida such as Hopkins Manufacturing Company (now Glock Firearms) and Pritchard Rifle Works (now Armalite Firearms). In 1951 Orlando Arsenal arms factory merged into National Armory Corporation which later merged into Colt Industries Incorporated In 1966 National Armory Corporation sold its assets to Brownells plc who would continue producing firearms under the Brownells name throughout much of the 1990's through 2002...Brownells Plc then divested itself from Colt Industries Incorporated selling its firearms operations worldwide including several plants located in Longwood

Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,948 at the 2000 census. It lies on U.S. Route 21 about twenty miles southeast of Tampa and seventy-five miles northwest of Orlando. The name "Longwood" is likely derived from the Choctaw word "longwoo," meaning "place where there are many trees." There are several theories to explain the origin of this name, but one theory suggests that the first settler in Longwood may have been named John Long after he located a clearing in what is now the town when he was hunting for deer in 1832. Another theory suggests that the name derives from an old Indian term meaning "place of many people." A third theory suggests that Longwood may be derived from an early Cherokee word meaning "broad path leading to a water supply." Whatever its derivation, Longwood has been known by this name since at least 1823 when it was platted as part of a land grant made to Colonel John Baldwin by Governor Carlos Manuel de Floridas. In 1835, General James Kenedy founded Fort Brooke on Palatka Island during his military occupation of Florida after Seminole chief Osceola had surrendered his statehood petition to Spain. After Kenedy's departure, Baldwin resumed development of Fort Brooke and began issuing land grants to individuals and families who agreed to help him build roads and other infrastructure for military purposes within Tampa Bay area including Longwood Township (later renamed Hillsborough County). By 1840, most residents living within Tampa Bay area had relocated or were leaving for new homes due to political instability following Mexico's Mexican War (1846-1848). However, some residents who remained behind continued developing their farmsteads around what is now downtown Longwood with some constructing modest brick buildings which still stand today. Some additional structures built during this time include: Damen House (now Tallahassee State University), Eustis' Store (now Eustis Memorial Library), Wiggs' Iron Works (now Wiggs Furniture store), Pioneer Cemetery (later Paradise Baptist Church), Presbyterian Church (later First Presbyterian Church & School), Methodist Episcopal Chapel (later Stonington Methodist Episcopal Chapel) and Goodrich's Leather Goods store which later became known as The Coach House Inn & Restaurant

Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 by William Ladd and his wife Anna. Longwood is located on State Road 67, about 12 miles (19 km) west of Lakeland and 9 miles (16 km) east of Marianna. The first settlers in what is now Longwood were Anna's brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James Aitken and Martha Griffiths. In 1892, when William Ladd purchased land from the Creek nation of Seminole Indians for $1 per acre ($40 per kilometer), he added a small settlement to his farmstead known as "Laddville". The post office at Longwood was established in 1893, and opened under the name "Marianna". The name change came about because at that time there was only one mail route from Tampa to Tallahassee; Marianna served as the eastern terminus of this route. In 1907, John Witherspoon bought part of the original Laddville farm for $4 per acre ($160 per kilometer). He developed it into a large cotton plantation called Witherspoon's Cotton Fields. After World War II ended hostilities between the United States and Japan— which had caused much damage to Japanese property—Witherspoon turned his plantation over to American citizens who donated it back to Japanese nationals who had owned it before war broke out. In 1955, when Interstate 95 was constructed through Polk County, Main Street became I-95/US 441 southbound lanes concurrent with US 84 eastbound lanes through Longwood village merged onto I-95 southbound mainline just south of exit 54A (the current intersection with US 441). At this point Main Street became U.S.-84/I-95 dual highway designation until its truncation following the construction of I-10w near Sweetwater Springs in 2001. On July 1st 2003 UF Expressway opened up portions of SW corner where US 84 used to meet I-95
