Longwood is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Longwood" comes from the Seminole word longhouse meaning "a large and comfortable house." The first permanent settler in Longwood was Dr. David Pemberton in 1835. In 1887, John Hargrave became the first white resident of Longwood when he moved from nearby Winter Haven. By 1915, there were over 100 white residents living in Longwood. The post office was established here on February 1, 1907; it remained open until 1961. One of the earliest industries to come to Longwood was agriculture; early crops included cotton and phosphate potatoes. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1890; these have been replaced by a few other businesses over time including a grocery store and an insurance agency since then. In 1916, local school superintendent Elisha Coker opened what would become known as Pinecrest Elementary School which served students throughout Polk County until 1971 when it became part of Lakeland High Schools system. In that year, Lakeland High Schools also added an annex-style building for Longwood Middle School which remains today as one of its most popular features (along with its namesake). In 1967, construction began on what would become known as Pinecrest Mall which soon became one of South Florida's largest shopping centers; it still includes several anchor stores as well as numerous smaller businesses today including two hair salons and three convenience stores among others! For many years now, Pinecrest Mall has been home to several nightclubs such as CenturyLink Field's Miami Heat basketball games or Live Nation's Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame Induction CeremonyTM . This recent history aside however, much more significant milestones occurred within the walls of Pinecrest Mall itself during this time: on October 15th 1984 - seventeen years after its opening - Hurricane Andrew hit Central Florida killing more than fifty people and causing extensive damage across much of southcentral Florida - including both Palm Beach County along with portions of Broward County - making Pinecrest Mall arguably one of Central Florida's most iconic tourist destinations today! This storm also made headlines all throughout southeasternFlorida through print media (eclipsing any reports relating to Hurricane Irma) ..... so much so that even now nearly four decades later some elements within Pinecrest Mall still generate major traffic jams due not only to their popularity but also because they remain largely unrestricted by mall management!
