Longwood has been a town in Clay County, Florida since 1836. The community was named for the long wood that bisected the town. There have been several attempts to rename the community after other places including "Lehigh" and "Lonely Hill". In 1956, Longwood was renamed for General James Longstreet who fought in the American Revolution and served as a Brigadier General in the United StatesArmy. It is also home to Tallahassee's only public golf course which opened in 1967. The town of Longwood was platted in 1836 by John Wesley Powell and others on land acquired from Chief Osceola. The first settler, David Spears, arrived with his family in 1840. By 1850, there were over 100 residents living at Longwood. The post office was established at Longwood on December 12, 1856, and remained open until it closed on November 2, 1903. At that time, it was one of six towns organized within Clay County by Governor Coker under the provisions of an act passed by Congress entitled "An Act to organize counties within this State." The Act specifically granted these six towns authority to establish their own governments with limited powers; however, they were allowed to keep theirexisting post offices and juries. In 1861-1862122 men from Clay County served in Confederate troops during the American Civil War under General James Longstreet (whom many of them had known when he fought for the South). After hostilities ended, many former Confederates returned home and began farming at various points around Clay County outside of Longwood.. One such individual becamethe first African American resident of clay county when he moved into what is now part of Tallahassee in 1865 after being accepted into a white farm family there
In 1835, the area that is now Longwood was part of Escambia County. In 1876, it became part of Lake County. In 1907, it became a city.
