Bipedalism has been present in Longwood, Florida for over a hundred years. The first bipedal humans in the area were probably the Achenegas, who lived on the central peninsula of Florida about 12,000 years ago. After awhile, other cultures began to arrive in the area and interact with the Achenegas. By 500 BC, there were human settlements in what is now Longwood. In 1762, Englishman James Cook discovered and named Key West after his explorations in that region. The town of Key West was founded by Captain John Bolivar on November 3rd, 1823 as a stopover on his journey from Cuba to Pensacola. He called it "Bolivar's Fort" because he thought it resembled Venezuela’s capital city of Caracas. The fort was abandoned after only a few months and re-occupied by Spanish colonists. It wasn’t until 1828 that Key West became an English Town under British rule when Spain ceded its rights to England in return for independence from Spain. In 1847, American soldiers burned down part of Bolito’s Battery which later became known as Fort Brooke. This event helped start Longwood’s military tradition and made it one of “the most important small towns north of Tampa Bay” according to historian Don Freeman*. In 1861*, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army from Gainesville southwestward past Longwood towards Jacksonville.* Unfortunately for Ewell and his troops, they ran into heavy Union resistance at Bolivar Park* just south of town* during their attempted march throughLongwood *. This park is todayknown as Central Park South>. As time passed, people started discovering natural resources such as timber and oil near Longwood so industry soon followed*. By 1980*,Longwood had become one of the most industrialized communities in Southwest Florida with over 30 businesses * including 3 major banks*. There are still many traditional industries such as agriculture and fishing present but these have largely been replaced by high-tech/pesticide based industries *. Recently there has been some growth in the tourism industry withifestations like Anakbarpur Safari Park*, which opened up next door toLongwoods largest shopping mall* (*Anakbarpur Safari Park is open 8am-4pm).
