Hodge opened a grocery and post office in what is now the Old Post Office building on US1A (now Eastern Ave.). In 1907, Mr. Gadsden bought a home and developed it into an agricultural estate known as Gadsden Farms which has since been destroyed by fire and development; today only traces of its original layout remain. In 1949, Drury University awarded a Baccalaureate degree to Mrs., Mildred Dillard who had worked for many years as an elementary school teacher in nearby Opa Locka before moving to Tallahassee to be nearer her family. Mrs. Dillard donated land near her old school building which became the first major development in Longwood after she died; this helped revive interest in the town and make it more accessible to tourists during those days before Interstate 75 made it difficult to get around town without spending hours driving around or taking buses or trains back and forth between Tallahassee and Longwood). Since then, much has happened within the walls of just one small village: professional athletes such as LeBron James (who grew up just yards away from where he played high school ball), Tiger Woods (whose mother lived two doors down from Mrs. Dillard), all three Umpires who officiated at The Masters golf tournament—all have hometown roots hereabouts; long-time residents include retired college professors like Drury’s president emeritus Meghan Kossuth (of Gainesville) AND Al Franken! The history of binoculars spans centuries and there are many different types of them. Binoculars have been used for a variety of purposes such as watching animals, observing people and objects in the environment, and learning about distant objects. The first binoculars were created around 6000 BC but they were not very successful. Around 1500 AD, a man by the name of Johannes Celsus developed a type of binocular that was very successful. He called it an oculus because it looked like an eye (Figure 1). This new type of binocular became known as the crescent moon because it had two lenses on each side which made it look like a semicircular lens (Figure 2). In 1576, another man by the name of Nicholas-Jacques Conte came up with a new type ofbinocular that he called a skyrate or “sky watch” due to its use for observing the sky ( Figure 3). This new typeofbinocular had four lenses on each side which gave it a much more detailed view than any other previous type. By 1795, all types of binoculars had become popular and were available to everyone ( Figure 4). There are many different reasons why people started usingbinoculars including military purposes, astronomy, hunting/fishing, looking at maps and charts, studying plants and animals, etc. However, the most common reason why people started usingbinoculars was for enjoying nature images because they could see things that others would only be able to understand if they were wearing glasses (Figure 5).

Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Longwood were the Miamis who settled along the Suwannee River in what is now Midas Township in 1824. They were followed by other groups of early settlers including the Dunlap brothers and their families, who arrived around 1835; James Crain and his family from Kentucky, arriving around 1840; John Soward from Massachusetts, settling around 1845; Isaac Goodrich from New York City, settling around 1850; and Abraham Lincoln and his family from Illinois, arriving about 1860. The first school was built in what is now Midas Township on July 6, 1851. It was called The Indian School until it became Longwood High School in 1906. In 1865 Orange Blossom Creek flooded and destroyed many homes along its course as it flowed through town center for the third time that year; this made an impact on which areas would become developing neighborhoods and businesses later on. In 1916 Longwood became one of five towns located withinJacksonville Municipal District when Jacksonville was created as a result of passage of state constitutional amendment No. 5 (also known as "The Everglades Decision"). At that time all municipalities within Jacksonville were granted equal powers with respect to education and other local government functions under State laws then still operative (i.e., no county or municipal boundaries). As a result of this arrangement every municipality within Jacksonville had access to all available funds for infrastructure development (including but not limited to roads/streets/parking lots), public works projects (such as schools/appearance repairs), fire protection measures (including but not limited to streetlights/lighting systems), libraries/library resources (including books & periodicals) and land acquisition for new development or expansion of existing businesses etc.. Jackson County residents continued to be primarily responsible for funding most aspects of local government operations until 1967 when such responsibility went fully into the hands of the city authorities pursuant to section 7-4-1(a) of the Florida Constitution which authorizes Pinellas Park Mayor Harry Bales “to make recommendations...to Pinellas County Commissioners relative thereto” . In 1976 Tampa annexed Longwood so annexation removed any remaining downtown business enterprise presence between Midas Boulevard eastward through Polk Street southward before terminating at US 301 northbound after crossing over White Sands Lake into Hillsborough County
Longwood was founded in 1837 by Captain James Long, who resided on the island of Hispaniola. The town was named for James Long, 1st Viscount Moran. It served as a stop on the Underground Railroad and was also an important center for business and culture during the early Florida years. In 1925, Longwood became a city.
