Longwood is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Bridgeport metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Longwood were French colonists who built Fort Caroline in 1763. The fort was decommissioned in 1768 after Spanish troops destroyed it. A small community developed around the fort and by 1800, Longwood had a population of 100 people. In 1834, Governor John Crain ordered the construction of Fort Union on recommendation of his friend and mentor James Kenedy. After only two months of construction, Kenedy realized that he needed more men to help with the project and so he transferred his forces to Pensacola and began building Fort Union there instead. In 1836, Congress authorized President Andrew Jackson to annex Florida into the United States as part of his "Western Expansion" policy. By this time, Longwood had already become a thriving community with a population of 350 people. On February 11, 1840—just weeks after Ulysses S Grant became president—Longwood's first courthouse opened its doors for business when Judge Robert Engleman presided over proceedings from nearby Gainesville courtroom. On November 12th 1840 (the anniversary of Jacksonville's incorporation as an independent city), Longwood organized itself into a town charter with five trustees: one from each county in Polk County plus Mayor James Fenton and Treasurer Moses Kingdall from Tampa Bay Area (then known as St Petersburg). The cornerstone for what would become downtown Longwood was laid on April 6th 1841 by First Selectman Amos Westphal assisted by Mayor Fenton and Trustees George Waddell (from Hillsborough County), Daniel Bangs (from Pasco County), Solomon Greenleaf (a lawyer from Mobile) and Hiram Piggott (of Tallahassee). growth continued unabated during Reconstruction through annexation of new territory including Plantation Key near present day Sanford; Ormond Beach; Auburndale; Cedar Key; Winter Haven; Cutler Keys – all located within 25 miles radius or less than $1 per acre! Growth continued during the late 1960s and early 1970s when Longwood established itself as one of Florida’s fastest-growing cities. In 1978, Mayor Harry Bryant announced that Longwood would be chosen to become the site for Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA). The airport would become one of South Florida’s largest employers and contribute significantly to the city’s economy. That same year saw construction begin on PBIA’s first runway which eventually served as thetown's main transportation artery until 1998 when Interstate 95 was constructed cutting off access from southbound traffic entering or leaving PBIA. Today, Longwood remains an important cultural center for southFlorida thanks to its many popular attractions – including three golf courses (the Donald Trump Golf Club; Pinehurst Country Club; Mission Hills Country Club), two shopping centers (The mall at longwoods mall & Towne Center), two tennis courts (Longwoods Tennis Centre & Meadowlands Racquetball Complex) and several restaurants and bars including several steak houses and lounges situated along US 1 near I-95 exit 114B/J/K*.
