Longwood is a small town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in the area were French and Indian traders who came to Longwood from Mobile Bay in 1775. The town was founded on November 15, 1879 by Colonel John Long and his wife Anna Purdy Long. It originally consisted of twenty-six homes and two churches. The first school was built onuda Road near present day Church Street. In 1902, the Lonsdale School District was created when George Waddell donated land for a new school district in Leon County. The original buildings of the Lonsdale School District were destroyed by fire on May 6, 1938. A new school building was erected on Old Erie Road and dedicated on October 8, 1938. On January 21, 1951, the name of the town changed to Longwood after Drury Lane Elementary School became Longwood Middle School which then become Longwood High School in 1963 In 1966-1968 an Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) operated at longwoods primary research farm located east of town off SR 706 between US 321W and SR 912E . This AES study led to improved corn yields for local farmers and helped feed post-World War II America On July 10th 1959 Old Erie Rd intersection with SR 706 w/ Main St., ownership passed from Morse family to descendants of JH Morse who had bought it from them In early 1965 a group of students at Florida State University formed what would eventually be known as Tallahassee Community College (TCC). At that time there were no colleges or universities in Leon County so TCC offered its students a four-year degree program without having to leave their home county With little development taking place within walking distance of downtownLongwood residents began seeking ways to bring more economic development attention to their community through events such as golf tournaments or art shows aimed at attracting visitors In 2001 developer Tom Hickey purchased 5 acres adjacent to Main Street where he plans to create an award winning mixed use project with apartments tower above a grocery store/wine shop/variety store etc . Longwood was a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States until it was absorbed by Fort Lauderdale in 1959. The post office at Longwood was established on December 12, 1892, and remained in operation until 1954.
