In 1892, Anna Ladd married Captains John Southerland and Daniel Webster for whom she named her daughter after them both – Anna Maria Webster Longwood. In 1903, Anna Maria Webster Longwood gave birth to her only child: Commodore James Fenton Mahoney (1893-1947). A few years later AnnaMaria Webster Longwood also gave birth to her husband’s successor as Captain John Mahoney’s brother; Lt Colonel Edward Ransom Mahoney (1895-1974). After his death in 1947 Lieutenant Colonel Edward Ransom Mahoney was buried at Arlington Cemetery with full military honors on November 10th 1957 by then Major General Reuben J. Moseley USMC (Retired) succeeded him as Commandant of Cadets at West Point Military Academy under which rank he had been promoted from Second lieutenant to colonel less than two weeks before his death due to old age on October 16th 1957 following a long illness confined to bed since January 25th 1957 when he received notification that he would not recover from a cerebral embolism caught while traveling home after attending an Army medical conference at Ft Sam Houston Texas on September 15th 1956

The first post office was established in 1837; it was renamed to Longwood in 1881. In 1886, the first school opened in the town. The present day courthouse stands on Main Street in the town.
