The first structure built in Longwood was a cabin named Cabin No 1 which was completed in 1838-39 by Brevard's son-in-law James McDowell Jr.. This cabin served as headquarters for cavalry units stationed along the Gulf Coast during Mexican-American War years (1846-48). Afterward,Brevard continued to build cabins until his death in 1850; however, these structures were not demolished until 1951 due to their historical significance.
