Lighthouse Point, Florida is a small town in Escambia County, Florida. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is located on State Road 9 west of Pensacola. Lighthouse Point was founded by Captain John Smith in 1795 as a trading post on the mainland side of what is now Pensacola Bay. It served as a lighthouse until 1868 when it was moved to its current location about two miles northeast of the present-day town center. In 1957, Lighthouse Point became an incorporated community with a government and services department headed by a mayor and three trustees. The town has since undergone several name changes, most notably to become Lakeland after being annexed by the larger city of Pensacola in 1959. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Pensacola Bay occurred in 1592 when Spaniard Hernando de Soto arrived on an expedition from Mexico City with five hundred soldiers and settlers looking for new land to colonize. He named this area Floridas after his patron saint, Ferdinand Magellan (1519–1596). After numerous voyages and encounters with Native Americans, including the Apalachicolas who had been living along the coast for centuries before contact with Europeans began, Spanish explorers discovered Terra Florida (the Land of Flowers) on January 8, 1565 when Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed near Santa Rosa Island off Cape St Vincent Peninsula during his ill-fated search for India's Spice Islands. Several weeks later Agustín de la Cámpora reached San Miguel Island off Cape St Vincent Peninsula and reported seeing "islands" which he interpreted as "terra firma". On October 5th Francisco Hernández de Acosta sighted land - likely Santa Rosa Island - just north of where Menéndez De Avilés had landed less than two weeks earlier but erroneously thought he had found India's Spice Islands instead! This discovery marked the beginning of Spanish exploration and claim to much of North America via sailing routes through South America instead of overland route through Mexico or Central America which would take many years! In 1595 Captain John Smith sailed from England into Pensacola Bay only to find that there was no harbor available due to high waves crashing against shorelines caused by high tides combined with strong winds created by hurricanes each season. He decided to build himself a Fort at Lighthouse Point using materials scavenged from local fishermen who could not get access to anchors or other modern supplies needed for ships anchored offshore because they were afraid their crops would be looted if they were seen coming ashore! Smith also built an inner defensive stockade around his fortification which included cannon salvaged from English warships then still being under construction at Deptford Dockyards in London! This fortification may have been one reason why Spanish pirates did not attack British coastal colonies such as Pensacola until 1609! For more than 100 years thereafter until 1868 when it was moved to its present location NE corner Of town flagstaff remains standing today undercover only while sunrise/sunset
Lighthouse Point was a small, abandoned lighthouse on the Florida Keys that still stands today. The Lighthouse Point lighthouse was built in 1838 and abandonment began in 1861 due to a lack of funding. In 1872, the lighthouse was converted into an observation tower and it remained in this state until 1966 when it was donated to the University of Miami. Today, the Lighthouse Point lighthouse is a tourist attraction and can be visited during regular visits to Key West or Marco Island.
