In 1892, Lighthouse Point became the first lighthouse in the United States to be automated with a modern telescope. The facility was originally built as a lighthouse and observatory by the US Coast Guard. In 1915, it was purchased by the Naval Observatory. It has been used for observing and calibrating telescopes ever since. The building that now houses the Naval Observatory is one of the oldest structures on Lighthouse Point. It was built in 1793 as an observation tower for Fort Caroline and later served as a military post during the Spanish-American War. It became a naval base in 1898 and underwent renovations in 1912 that included adding an observatory on top of the commandant’s house. Today, Lighthouse Point serves as an important research center for astronomy including studies of planets, stars, asteroids, comets, meteors, and volcano eruptions. The Naval Observatory also operates several smaller telescopes here including a 1 meter reflecting telescope called “Hercules” which opened in 1984 and is home to two large Schmidt optics telescopes which are used to study binary stars (two stars orbiting around each other). Additionally, there is also a 2 Meter Arecibo Telescope located here which is capable of resolving individual galaxies at over 120 kilometers distance!

In 2007, an $8 million project renovated both the exterior and interior of the lighthouse while also adding interactive exhibits inside. The renovation closed down for one year after Hurricane Francis caused extensive damage within the structure. Lighthouse Point has a variety of businesses that provide services such as restaurants, shops, bars and casinos along with residential properties for sale or rent including vacation rentals and condominiums/apartments. It is home to several golf courses including nearby Naples Golf Club which offers amateur tournaments throughout the year as well as professional tournaments during summer months
