Lighthouse Point, Florida is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,816 at the 2010 census. Lighthouse Point was founded on August 14, 1835 by Major General John C. Fremont as a military post on the tip of an uninhabited island near what is now Lighthouse Point Boulevard and Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami. The site had been selected because it was easily accessible from both land and sea and its location provided protection from pirate raids. A lighthouse was built here in 1838; it burned down in 1886 but was rebuilt and became operational again in 1903. From 1913 to 1923, Lighthouse Point served as the eastern terminus of the Overseas telegraph line which linked Key West with Boston and New York City. The first lighthouse keeper's house at Lighthouse Point was built about 1842 by Captain George Waddell of Palatka Commandery of the British Army during the Seminole Wars against Native Americans led by Chief Osceola (or Tequesta). It later became part of Fort Myers when that fort was moved there from Fort Wychek on Biscayne Bay in 1846; it remained there until 1910 when it moved to another location within Miami-Dade County. In 1938, Lighthouse Point voters raised money for a new lighthouse which would be sited on Fifth Avenue just east of Northwest First Street between Second and Third Streets; construction began that year and finished two years later. The new lighthouse features an octagonal tower with a red light source above a white enameled lantern housing a Fresnel lens which can see up to 95 feet below ground level; it replaced an earlier predecessor which had been destroyed by fire in 1886. A second lighthouse keeper's house also stood on Fifth Avenue between Second and Third Streets until 1909 when it too burned down due to arson caused by vandals who were then able to torch buildings around town including one next door to the new lighthouses located at Eighth Avenue NW (now Collins Avenue) and First Street NE (now NW Seventh Street). That building also housed the offices of Miami Beach Managerate before being demolition following World War II for use as barracks for Navy sailors stationed at Naval StationMiami Beach; however, some restoration work has since been done there including reconstructed walls dating back to 1840s which are currently open to the public as part of Museum Row Historic District . An additional wharf used for docking vessels near Northwest Fourth Street formed part of what is now Flagler Drive SW near Northeast Fourth Street where Wharf Road begins today after being extended northward along Biscayne Boulevard following completion of American River Bridge Project ; this wharf also served as terminals for runabouts used ferries serving both Key West and Cuba during those times . In 1925 – 1926, administrative offices were relocated from Lighthouse Point Annex next door inside present day Hard Rock Casino & Resort while still maintaining linkages with key Limekiln Way area ); today those offices serve as Sea Grant Center headquarters while main facility functions as Marine Science Institute
