Lighthouse Point is a small town located in Santa Rosa County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Lighthouse Point is one of two communities in the county and it is also home to the only lighthouse in Santa Rosa County. The other community is Plantation Lakes. The first post office at Lighthouse Point was established on July 9, 1892. It was renamed "Ochlockonee" in 1912 due to its proximity to Ochlockonee Inlet on Seminole Bayou. In 1916, a Temporary Lighthouse was established and later demolished because of weather conditions. A permanent lighthouse was built by order of the US Coast Guard from 1909-1912 and designed by George A Gilliland Jr.. It served as both a lookout station for coastal navigation and as a research station for mapping ocean currents and tides. On October 12, 1928, an automatic sending beacon atop the tower became operational providing warning service for vessels approaching or passing through Lighthouse Point National Recreation Area which included Plantation Lakes National Wildlife Refuge until 1969 when that refuge's administration moved to Fort Myers Beach after being acquired by Congress under the Soil Conservation Service Act Amendments of 1966. The Coast Guard abandoned transmitting maintenance signals from Lighthouse Point effective December 1, 1969; however they continue send emergency services including searchlights from night shift units until present day with occasional live show during high tide season In 2006–2007 local officials worked together with state government counterparts to install new lighting system at lighthouse which includes ten LED lightbulbs each capable of 1100 lumens each The original Fresnel lens had been replaced in 1917 but Breakwater light (the current operating light) wasn't put into service until 1951 On November 6th 1925 an oil tanker sunk off shore near Gadsden Inlet while anchored offshore within 100 yards of land which resulted in over $5 million being lost due to fire caused by oil spillage from tanker A new breakwater has been constructed upstream since this incident making it possible for vessels upriver without going through Gadsden Inlet docking approval process
