Lighthouse Point is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It was founded by the father of the current mayor and its first postmaster, George Futch. The town was named after Lighthouse Hill on which a lighthouse had been built when it was annexed by Monroe County in 1853. The original Lighthouse Point Post Office opened on February 14, 1854. The first residents were Rufus Witherspoon and his wife Sallie Crouse. In 1865, postmaster Isaac Chaffin organized the first Masonic Lodge at Lighthouse Point with membership limited to white men only. The first black man to be ordained as a minister in Florida was Rev. Joseph Washington who served from 1865-1868 at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville before moving to Lighthouse Point where he became pastor from 1868-1875 and again from 1889-1893 at First Presbyterian Church near the present day ferry landing. In 1917 construction began on what would become known as modern Lighthouse Point Town Hall which still stands today and is used for local government functions as well as occasional concerts and other events. At that time the population of Lighthouse Point was about 350 people with more than 100 businesses including an ice cream parlor, bakery, grocery store, lumberyard and mill complex along Withlacoochee River Road between US 1/2 north and south (now US 11/12 east). By 1939 there were only 30 residents left while 400 jobs were provided by local businesses in addition to nine homes operated by the Civilian Conservation Corps during World War II; these homes are now preserved within Historic District boundaries of Lighthouse Point Village Museum./ The days of large lighthouses commanding wide areas for night spotting may have come to an end but those living close enough continue to enjoy some beautiful views each day through their home windows or from their porch steps.; many people refer to this period of time prior to 1960s as "the good old days" since then things have changed immensely especially with all new technology being brought into play such as cell phone service., internet access,, electric vehicles,,,, etc... so much has changed since then that one might wonder why it took so long for something like this museum project materialize.?
