Lighthouse Point was founded in 1892 by brothers John and James Conway. The Conways were the first people to build a lighthouse on Lighthouse Point, and they named it after their father, also named John Conway. The first lighthouse was built in 1894, and it served as a warning beacon for warships stationed at Fort Myers. In 1935, the United States Coast Guard replaced the original lighthouse with a more modern structure. In 1949, Lighthouse Point became part of the City of Miami Beach. In 1985, Lighthouse Point was renamed High Capacity Kitson Park in honor of then-Mayor James Kipperman. From 1985 to 1990, Mayor Kipperman funded construction of a new clubhouse and beachfront park on the site of the old clubhouse. The park is now home to Miami Beach's only baseball stadium and several soccer fields. Lighthouse Point has been an important community resource for over 100 years. In 1854, Congress designated Lighthouse Key as a U.S. Naval Base for use by members of the Navy's Third Fleet during local storms near Tampa Bay The first light tower at Lighthouse Point was built in 1853 by Lieutenant Colonel John Swayne; it functioned until 1886 when it was replaced with a new light tower which became operational in 1893 In 1907, American Electric Light Company constructed an electric lighting system at Lighthouse Key that provided service to all points around Tampa Bay In 1951, American Electric Light Company merged with GEICO to form Pan Am World Airways Ltd., which operated passenger air travel from New York City to destination cities throughout Latin America As part of its corporate restructuring in 1984, GEICO divested itself of Pan Am World Airways Ltd., selling off its assets including Lighthouse Key Ferry Terminal and other commercial interests On July 16th 1994, Commodore Chuck Yeager flew his Eagle II Jet Turbo prop plane over St Petersburg International Airport - becoming only the second person ever to do so

On July 2, 1800 Colonel José Antonio Menéndez y Fuentes donated land near what is now downtown Lighthouse Point for use as a military post named Fort Santiago de Cuba; this place became known as Santa Elena del Rio Grande (Spanish: La Candelaria). At its inception, Santiago had six cannons but when hostilities ended with American victory over Spain in 1898 these were replaced by two cannons at Boca ChicaBattery on November 6th of that year In 1899 due to increased development around Santiago de Cuba and interest in maritime pursuits throughout all of Florida Bay County, a committee chaired by J.P Jennings recommended that the name be changed from Fort Santiago De Cuba to Lighthouse Point because there were no lighthouses along what is now US 1 south of Clearwater Beach Captain A H Murchison who served with Commodore Matthew Perry during his visit to Pensacola Harbor reported seeing lights at night from Encinitas Island just off HWY 98 about 5 miles east of Pt Conception he called it Brazos Headland but we know today as Lighthouse point Captains Thomas Kidd and William Kidd who commanded USS Constitution during her blockade ran aground on Una Reef about 7 miles SENO our ships anchored offshore until relieved early morning Nov 25th 1800 using boats under Captains Elisha Stevens Intrepid Squadron longboat people went ashore collected stores saw no sign of life so returned without loss sighted another light abeam range 10 miles SW Sandy Hook Light while anchored there used binoculars taking pictures took picture No sooner had I finished snapping this picture than we heard rockets fired off our port side we knew then they were not rockets they were shots from batteries aboard HMS Resolution let us hope for better soon so fortification could be started Commander Edward Preble commanding USS Constitution sent boatload led by First Lieutenant Samuel Eliot Morison upriver got permission ashore send party armed with rifles guns & pistols rec'd permission returned gunfire stopped Rockets being shot seemed like workmen doing their job rather than pirates
