Lighthouse Point is a small peninsula located in the Gulf of Mexico, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) southeast of Tampa, Florida. The point is named for the original lighthouse built in 1814 by British officers to guide ships entering and leaving Tampa Bay. The present-day lighthouse was erected in 1892 and is a National Historic Landmark. The first European to visit Lighthouse Point was Spanish explorer Alonso de la Vega in 1527. A second Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de León, sighted the point on July 3, 1509 while sailing from Cuba to Puerto Rico. By 1615, English traders had established trading posts at Lighthouse Point. In 1765, the British military captured Fort Myers and moved it to Tampa Bay; they renamed it Fort Lauderdale. The first Lighthouse Keeper's House was built on what is now State Road 7 near the current lighthouse. In 1840, a new lighthouse was constructed at Lighthouse Point with an keepers' house, four storeys high (the tower today),and two square rooms on either side of a triangular pedimented gatehouse that led into the harborage area inside the fortifications. In 1893 an addition were added to support more traffic coming into and going out of Tampa Bay: a fog horn and light show booth were added on top of the keepers' house; additional staircases led up from below ground level to each room; an engine room and workshop were also added; and an electric light system replaced gaslight back then as well as today's high-intensity sodium lights which are activated through Fresnel lenses installed at several points around the exterior surface of both keepers' houses providing both visual and audible warning when needed
