In 1834, Captain Gideon Welles set out from Fort Myers with his crew of volunteer sailors to build what would become one of America's first lighthouses offshore - well aware that Spanish ships regularly patrolled this region looking for shipwrecked Americans or pirates who might have been looting coastal shipments arriving from Cuba or Puerto Rico. A third light also served as Punta Gorda Light between 1865-1868 before becoming unserviceable due to weather damage Commander James Fenton transferred thence command over both Lights onto US Coast Guard cutter Constitution which towed them into Havana harbor where they remained until sold effective February 26th 1898 A fourth light called Black Reefer ( later renamed Beacon) replaced Constitution at Punta Gorda Light effective March 3rd 1898 until destroyed by fire on July 30th 1902 A total of six lights manned by private individuals operated at various times alongwith three coast guard cutters Union Steamer Starlite Ladycat(White Flag Ship), Gulfstream Gull(Black Flag Ship) during those years Additionally Coast Guard Cutter Whitefish patrolled waters off shore intermittently providing maritime security patrols During World War II additional assets included combat landing craft Landing Craft Infantry (LCI), MH-60 Seahawk helicoptersand CSS intimidators
