In 1957-58, under then-Governor of Florida Bob Graham, Lighthouse Point became an emergency relocation camp for Gadsden students attending Key West High School during Hurricane Andrew's landfall in 1992. At that time, it was one of only two Keys community centers open to hurricane evacuees from both Miami and Tampa Bay areas; others were Everglades Municipal Airport and Miramar Naval Air Station (now Miramar Marine Corps Base). In 1998-1999, following the collapse of its pier after severe storms associated with Tropical Storm Floyd causedmudslides on October 20th which destroyed portions of Fort Myers Beach Drive just east of Lighthouse Point access road leading to key beachfront properties including Channelside Inn & Marina - now known as Sunrise Beach Resort - much property along Sunrise Beach Road has been knocked down or inundated by mudslides since then making full restoration/rehabilitation extremely difficult if not impossible given current conditions; nevertheless federal funding has been available through FEMA for this purpose As part of comprehensive redevelopment effort encompassing demolition and replacement/ reconstruction/updating/renovation project(s) totaling approximately $183 million which is expected to be completed by fall 2020:Phase I – demolish old pier structure including levee system & pilings; Phase II – realign streetscape with modern north–south design; Phase III – construct walkway connecting ferry dock to mainland via bridge over St Johns River corridor
