Fitch as a lighthouse and trading post on an uninhabited island in the bay of Biscayne Bay. The first lighthouses were built at Lighthouse Point and Key West, both in 1838. In 1840, lighthouse keeper John Godfrey erected a new lighthouse at Lighthouse Point to serve as the center for all lights along the bay. The original Fresnel lens was replaced in 1902 by a more advanced design that allowed for better visuals during foggy weather. The site of today's Lighthouse Point was acquired by the city of Miami in 1922 and became part of the city limits just outside of Fort Lauderdale. In 1977, Lighthouse Point reverted back to its original name when it became clear that Miami would never annex it again into its city limits because it is still within county jurisdiction. Today, Lighthouse Point is home to several businesses including Alabaster Creameries, Dolphin Seafoods, American Fish Market, and Jaxon's Landing Marina which offers boat rentals and fishing trips throughout the year.
