Lighthouse Point is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, located on the Gulf of Mexico. The Lighthouse Point lighthouse was built in 1851 and is the only functioning lighthouse in Monroe County. It is also one of the few remaining lighthouses in Southeast Florida. The town was founded by members of the Baptist church who used to meet at the lighthouse to discuss religious issues. The first Keeper of the lighthouse was James Hargrave, who served from 1857 to 1861. In 1886, Captain John Sisson took over as keeper and continued until his death in 1922. The current Keeper is Mr. Darrell Cogan who has been with the lighthouse since 1984. The Lighthouse Point lighthouse sits on a spit of land that juts out into the gulf about two miles long and one mile wide at its widest point. There are steep cliffs around both ends of this spit which make for difficult navigation when foggy or during storms. There were originally four lights associated with Lighthouse Point: a red light, a white light, an acetylene lamp (later replaced by an electric light), and a searchlight (later replaced by a microwave beacon). In 1904, an additional three lights were added: a blue light, an orange reflector, and a green reflector (the last being added in 1949). In 1925-1926 work began on adding new batteries to provide electricity for all of these lights as part of renovations to improve safety after several hurricanes had struck Monroe County that year (including Hurricane Floyd). This project was completed without incident but required daily attendance by one keeper due to their importance as “keys” for powering all six lights! A turbine-driven water pump system replaced manual pumping systems starting in 1951; this allowed for automatic operation during high tide/storm conditions when manned pumps could not be operated due to turbulence or low water levels inside the keepers’ caskets! A helicopter service became available from 1989 until 1995 when it was discontinued because Ofcom determined there wasn’t enough evidence that it provided real value for money compared with ground based services! The Alfred Hitchcock movie "Psycho" filmed exterior shots at Lighthouse Point before moving inland near Pensacola Bay where most interior shots were shot later on location near Fort Walton Beach Alabama
