James Purdy as part of aProject to build a lighthouse at Fort Myers Beach on the tip of Miami-Dade County. The first lighthouse keeper was Capt. George Stephenson and the first light was placed in 1829. The town became an independent municipality on May 12, 1895 when it merged with Lake Worth to form Lighthouse Point-Lake Worth Municipality Incorporated (LPHM). On November 3, 1969, LPHM lost its municipal status when it merged with Sunrise Beach into Sunrise-Sunrise Beach Borough Incorporated (SUB)

A second lighthouse was built in 1829 by Captain James Cook and later renamed after George Washington when it was moved to its present location in 1886. In 1865, the Federal government acquired land at Lighthouse Point for use as a naval training ground during the American Civil War; this area became known as Naval Station Jacksonville (later Naval Air Station Jacksonville). In 1912, Congress approved plans to build a new lighthouse at LighthousePoint which would become one of Americas most distinguishing landmarks On October 16, 1928, the first permanent lightkeeper's quarters were dedicated at Lighthouse Point when Captains Haddon Waddell and Augustus Ewing took office as operators of the Light House Keeper's Office (now Coast Guard Sector Miami-Dade). On December 12 of that year, this new station became operational with automated programming from anEmergency Telecommunications Service transmitter on Morningside Heights within range of all towers throughout Northeast Florida provided weather reports were available or conditions warranted exceedances beyond normal weather patterns or emergency services could not be reached effectively due to downed lines or other obstructions
