Leesburg is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leesburg was founded in 1835 by Colonel John Lewis and his wife Anna Maria O'Neil Lewis. It was named for General James Lees who had surrendered to British forces during the Seminole War. In 1847, the town passed through an act of Congress which allowed for its incorporation as a town with a limit of fifty-six citizens only. On July 4, 1850, Leesburg became the county seat of Seminole County after it was chosen from a field nomination process by county commissioners Morris and Moore. Leesburg's first post office opened in October 1851. On May 3, 1857, Judge Augustus Hulse died and was succeeded by Judge George Fenton; on November 6th he was replaced by Judge Samuel Gist; on December 14th he resigned because of ill health and Mrs Gist took over until February 1st when her husband returned from military service and took over as judge until his death on January 10th 1861 - this event marked the end of male domination in government service in Leesburg.
