Leesburg is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Leesburg is located on US 41 south of Gainesville and north of Fort Pierce. The first Europeans to visit what is now Leesburg were the Spanish in 1606 when they sighted an island in the bay that bears their name; they named it Isla de las Palmas (Island of the Hands). In 1795, Captain James Cook discovered land on this bay and called it Terra Australis (Australia). The town was founded by Colonel John Brougham on November 2, 1824 as a permanent station on his surveying expedition from Jacksonville. Brougham named it for Rear-Admiral George Hallett who had commanded British forces at Port Jackson during the First Opium War (1839-42). At first, people only used Indian names for places such as Isla de las Palmas and Terra Australis because there was no English language available to them. In 1875, after construction began on the Florida Railroad through Leesburg Junction – which later became Gainesville – locals began using English terms for landmarks like Isla de las Palmas while still using Indian names for other locations around town. As rail travel increased throughout the area and more people began moving into Leesburg from surrounding counties, various streets were renamed including: Ponce de Leon Street (later State Road 73), Commodore Perry Boulevard (now US41), Major Nelson Avenue (now US1), Admiral Perry Boulevard (now Airport Boulevard) and finally Hallett Parkway after Rear-Admiral George Hallett who originally built most of present day Leesburg Junction. The growth of agriculture brought many new residents to Leesburght during its early years although some Indians continued to live there until about 1910 when their reservation was ceded back to Seminole Nation under federal law after negotiations overseen by Department of Interior Secretary Daniel Webster. After World War I ended with America's entry into World War I without any Japanese nationals being drafted or interned therein despite pleas from many Americans in Japan not to do so due to fears that Germany would win if hostilities broke out, most Japanese nationals living in America left voluntarily or were evicted following orders from military authorities upon their return home; however a small number remained behind among those deported via Operation Paperclip which also resulted in many American citizens working abroad during World War II as Axis spies. Most residents today are descendants of those who lived here prior to 1900; however some recent arrivals include refugees/asylees following Hurricane Irma which has caused extensive damage both inside and outside of town limits since September 2017 within what has been dubbed "Leesburg Beach". Leesburg is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The Lee River forms the eastern edge of Leesburg and flows through it to join the Miami River near downtown. The first European to visit Leesburg was Captain John Jumper on October 12, 1765. He named it "Newburgh" after his home town in New York City. In 1814 Indian traders from Tampa founded Fort Pickens on a bluff overlooking the river within sight of present-day Leesburg. A treaty negotiated by Ulysses S. Grant in 1868 recognised Fort Pickens as an American military post and gave it to Major General James Wofford as part of the Treaty of Tuskassaga. The Post Office opened at Leesburg on November 3, 1837, with LEE spelled "Lee". It changed its name to NEWBURGH on December 1st that year following the opening of Jacksonville's new post office just north of town on Broadway Street (the current site ofOld Jacksonville Hall). In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell established Fort Sumter east of town along what is now US-1 south of Old Jacksonville Hall where he stored supplies for his army during the Southern Rebellion which began in April 1861 and ended with Union victory at Bull Run two months later. From this point forward until 1865 there was only sporadic skirmishing between Confederate units and Federal troops throughout most of southern Monroe County save for an brief period around Forneytown in early 1862 when Confederate forces were unable to dislodge Union forces besieging Fort Donelson southeast of town. On October 25th 1860 Lincoln issued Proclamation No 546 stating that all slaveholders could free their slaves within ten days or they would be subject to martial law; however many people did not receive this proclamation because they had already freed their slaves before it became effective On November 16th 1860 Abraham Lincoln was sworn into office as President of the United States after being elected over Stephen Douglas; he took oaths under Chief Justice Salmon P Chase who administered them personally according to custom then followed by other members including Mr Lincoln’s wife Jennie Todd Lincoln who delivered a eulogy reading from her husband’s speech “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support every effort made by Her Majesty’s Government for preserving our union and extending justice among us." After taking his oath Abraham Lincoln moved from Springfield IL back into Washington D C where he lived until April 1865 when he left again forSpringfield IL where he died less than five months later due to complications from surgery .After President Abraham LINCOLN's death Fenton Peake took office as Acting President until May 4 1865 when Andrew Johnson became president
Leesburg was first settled in 1822 by John G. Lewis, who named the community for his father-in-law, Leverett Ford. The community grew rapidly after the opening of the Florida Railroad in 1834 and soon became a major town in Leon County. In 1884, Leesburg merged with neighboring Fort Pierce to form one large municipality. In 1925, the municipality was renamed to Lee'sborough after Colonel Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as General Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War.
