Leesburg is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leesburg was founded in 1836 by settlers from Scotland and Ireland who arrived on horseback. The original name of the town was "Leesborough". In 1868, a post office was established in Leesburg by James Fenton and named for his father-in-law Sir Thomas Lee. In 1892, citrus fruit grower J. W. Cobb bought land along US 1 near present day Leesville to establish what would become Citrus Heights Farms (now Citrus Land), one of Florida's earliest citrus plantations Cobb renamed his plantation after himself and developed it into one of the largest vegetable growers in Florida with crops such as okra and tomatoes . After selling his plantation in 1924 to Julius Rosenwald Jr., owner of Sears Roebuck & Co., Leesburg became an important shopping center for area residents until Rosenwald closed up shop in 1957. After years of decline, First National Bank opened its doors here on Highway 50E on May 10, 1984 as America's first national bank west of the Mississippi River since 1907 when Westinghouse Electric Company merged into General Electric Company . Leesburg is a small town located in southcentral Florida. Passenger arrivals began to dwindle during World War II because so many people left for military service; however, they have since resumed their growth rate, with estimated current population at around 508 residents. Leesburg has been home to several major events in its history: first appearing on historical maps with boundaries drawn by Governor Andrew Johnson in 1868; becoming the centerpiece of a citrus industry that prospered until 1964 when it was surpassed by Orlando; hosting the National Convention of The Baptist Association from 1907-1908; and being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The early history of Leesburg is cloaked in mystery because there are no records documenting its founding or growth until after Captain George Lewis arrived there from Georgia to start farming what would become Jacksonville County in 1829 underCaptain John C Calhoun (1784-1850). There are references to Captain Lewis' village but no physical evidence remaining today confirms its existence save forLewis' journals which document his travel and settlement hereabouts between November 8th 1830 - March 7th 1831 inclusive."
The Leesburg area was first settled in 1838 by John A. Stephenson and his wife, Sarah. The community was named after General Robert E. Lee and his family who had moved from Virginia to live near the present-day town of Leesburg. The Stephenson home still stands in the center of the community today, and is a museum open to the public. In 1851, Confederate Gen. Pee Dee Lamar bought 1,000 acres of land around present-day Leesburg for $2 per acre, which he used as a plantation to grow cotton. The town began expanding rapidly after Lamar's purchase, with homes being built on what are now streets in centralLeesburg such as Main Street and Arlington Avenue.
