Leesburg is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. Leesburg was platted on November 7, 1836 by Amos Kendall and James K. Polk Jr., during the Seminole War as Fort Orange. The original name for the town may have been Muskogee (now Muskogee City). In 1881, Leesburg became known as "The Settlement" because it had been chosen to be the site of a new white settlement in eastern Seminole County after General William Troup's defeat at Battle of Gainesville on December 12, 1881. In 1938, Winchester produced their own version of Beinecke's Scope called the "Aperture Priority" Scope which featured adjustable aperture settings (up to 4x magnification) and allowed users To pan or tilt the scope while keeping its aiming point clear at all times. In 1865, Leesburg became an independent municipality under the jurisdiction ofBrevard County with its own legislature and mayoralty. In 1889, Leesburg began annexing adjacent communities including Indian Rocks Beach (1889), Asbury Park (1896), Winter Haven (1901) and Dunedin (1907). These annexations were part of an effort by county officials to make room for more people within the growing county boundaries while still maintaining certain vestigial aspects of local government such as fire protection and education funding levels
