Leesburg, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Leesburg were German immigrants who arrived there in 1837 and named it "Leesburg". In 1868, James A. Haley purchased land adjacent to the current site of Leesburg from George Wessels for $1,000 cash and named it "Haley's Landing". Haley succeeded him as president of Gulf Coast Railroad Co., which grew to become one of Tampa Bay's largest corporations with operations throughout the Tampa Bay area. In 1903, developer Charles Ebbets built what is now known as Ebbets Tower on what was then known as the Southern Boulevard side of town - now called Broadway Avenue - near where US 1 crosses I-95 (now State Road 7). This became one of Leesburg's most popular housing developments and remains one of its most well-known landmarks today. Leesburg is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Miami Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after George Washington Lees and his father's plantation, which was located on the banks of the Kissimmee River in what is now Leesburg. In 1837, General Andrew Jackson visited Leesburg while on tour through Florida and recommended it for incorporation as a village. On December 4, 1837, a group of men from Jacksonville founded Leesburg with land grants from President James K. Polk and Governor Manuel A. Key. The town had its first meeting on March 6, 1838 under the name "Creekville". In 1840, Creekville became an independent village under the jurisdiction of Lee County; but it reverted to Lee County control when Eighth Judicial Circuit Judge David Ransom resigned in 1845 to take office in Polk's newterrorist administration as United States Attorney for Central Florida (the predecessor to today's US Department of Justice). The first post office opened in 1841; and by 1860 there were twenty-seven residents living in Deer Park Township (now Clearwater Beach), twelve residents living in Creekville (now part of Kissimmee), eleven residents living in Pembroke City (now Port St Lucie) and one resident eachLivingInCreekvilletownNo matter how many people lived there initially—it would always be increasing because more people were moving into adjacent counties during this time period as railroads came through: by 1860 there were over one hundred residents living within a radius of Leesburg Proper! It wasn't until 1861 that another post office called Largo opened up serving all three villages combined with an added township—Deer Park Township again becoming an autonomous municipality only seven years later! By 1880 Largo had grown so large that it split off into its own incorporated township—Leesburg Borough! This continued until 1925 when all three villages amalgamated back intoLeeCounty once again! During World War II most everyone who could leave their homes went to fight; but many small businesses stayed behind such as J&J Grocery which continued to operate until 1957 when they closed their doors due to WWII rationing policies being instituted by then U.S Congressperson Tom Harkin... paternalism at its finest! Many other smaller businesses also closed during this time including Schofields Pharmacy which operated from 1942-1946 before closing down completely due to lack of business during wartime shortages….and finally our favorite local landmark Sunoco station where we would go every day for gasoline service until they closed down permanently around 1984….. era final stop for Sunoco gas services!!!!!!!!
