Leesburg, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Leesburg is located on US-1 and forms an important commercial corridor between Jacksonville and Everglades City. The first settler in what became Leesburg was John Lewis who arrived in 1795. He named his new settlement after George Washington's home state of Virginia. In 1827, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Mobile to cross the Apalachicola River into Alabama to take control of that state from Spain and thus gain independence from Spain. General Jackson used the town as his headquarters for a few weeks before moving on to Tallahassee for more important affairs. In 1829, Jno Pemberton built a toll road through Leesburg which became known as "Pemberton Boulevard." The town grew rapidly as people came to trade withJacksonville and its booming cotton industry. By 1847, there were over 100 residents in Leesburg and it had two stores and one post office according to the 1840 U.S Census report In 1861, Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg attacked Union forces under Major General James Hogg at Gainesville Heights near present day Jacksonville Landing on Saturday morning November 12th during the Battle of Gainesville Hill (Emmons Park). Leesburg emerged as a small community on the southwest side of palm tree-lined Leesburg Boulevard in 1912 with 12 residents and two businesses. The first post office opened in 1914 and the name was changed to Leesburg in 1918. A branch of banks were constructed in 1922 and 1933 and Leesburg became a center for agriculture with several thousand acres (1,200 hectares) of land dedicated to cotton farming until after World War II when industry took over and it became primarily an industrial town. In 1957, Hurricane Inez made landfall near Leesburg; damage was extensive but less than expected due to good anticipation by local officials about prevailing winds that would cause minimal destruction inland Leesburg saw significant growth following the storm; within five years there had been more than 100 residences built along Highway 1A (now State Road 7), including many high-end homes that remain today Some credit this growth for being one of the most proactive mayors ever elected in Palm Beach County
