Leesburg is a municipality in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Leesburg is located on the east side of Lee County and northwest of Jacksonville. Leesburg was founded in 1892 as a small station on Florida's Panhandle by J.D. Liles and his family. Liles' father-in-law, Elisha Muhlenberg, built the first store in Leesburg and started trading goods to Easterners on Jones Road in 1894. In 1897, Elisha Muhlenberg sold his interest in the business to John Wills who continued to run it until 1916 when he died suddenly at the age of 73 years old. In 1917, Dolph Lundgren came to Leesburg from Jacksonville to open a lumberyard and sawmill on North Main Street which he operated until 1951 when it was bought by Averill Harriman Jr., son of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and wife Alice Wexler Harriman (daughter of banker Edward Dreyfus). After Averill Harriman Jr.'s death in 1954, the mill closed down for many years but reopened briefly under new ownership before closing again in 1984 after several fires damaged it extensively. In 1990–1991 a group of local businessmen purchased the mill from its previous owners and restored it back into operation as an agricultural processing plant with an adjacent 5500 square foot dealership that served as their sales headquarters while they renovated other parts of the facility including remodeling Liles Hall into an upscale banquet hall named after them that opened in 1992; this became known as "TheHarriman Place". Leesburg has seen significant development over time including two major thoroughfares: North Main Street which now hosts numerous restaurants and bars along one side while South Main Street features several businesses such as Barnes & Noble bookstore chain; Walmart Supercenter; Home Depot; Lowe's Home Hardware store; Dunkin' Donuts restaurant; Chick-fil-A drive-thru.; popular tourist destination since 1992 when TheHarrimanPlace reopened called "The Leesburg Resort" (now known as "Towne Lake" hotel) which includes three waterfalls: Towne Creek Falls onLee River between US 1/State Road 436 northbound exit off I-95 just past town limits about five miles south west of Jacksonville off SR 436 about 12 miles northeast from downtown Jacksonville - see map below for location * According to The Business Review newspaper article dated November 15th 2009 headlined “Eliminate Taxes From Your Business And Get Tax breaks” write your Congressman today asking him or her to cosponsor HJR 353 – American Recovery and Reinvestment Act sponsor Rep Lamar Smith (R-TX) authored legislation that would provide tax breaks for businesses eliminated by Obama’s stimulus package.*

Leesburg is home to Central High School and many other local businesses and organizations including the St Petersburg-Leesburg Chamber of Commerce which has been headquartered in Leesburg since 1909
