The range was initially called the “Gunsmith’s Range” and served as both a training ground for new riflemans and an opportunity for hunters to shoot game approaching from behind cover. It wasn’t until 1907 that the first dedicated target range opened in Leesburg proper – this time under the name “The Shooting Ground”. The range continued to serve as an essential hub for local gunfire enthusiasts well into the 20th century; during World War II it became an air-raid shelters facility before finally closing down circa 1970. Today, there are multiplegun ranges located throughout Leesburg – including one specifically designed for skeet shooting! Phelps opened fire on a group of women and children playing near their home in the town of Leesburg, Florida. The shooting was considered to be one of the deadliest acts committed against civilians in United States history.
Leesburg, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 2,818 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area and is within the political boundaries of Hillsborough County. The Leesburg community began as a farming village on the banks of the St Johns River in 1849. It grew rapidly during World War II as a munitions production and storage center for both American and British forces stationed in nearby Fort Pierce and Melbourne. The post office was established in 1945, and by 1960, Leesburg had become an incorporated town with a population of over 10,000. Today, much of its economic development comes from its status as an important transportation stop for commuters travelling to central Florida or Tampa Bay Area businesses. Leesburg has several Historic Districts that include: North Main Street Baptist Church (1910), Presbyterian Church (1896), Indianola Plantation (1904), Garden Homes (1920s), Clearwater Naval Air Station (1943-1945) and Wright Brothers hangar (1924). There are also several Neighborhood Development Associations that have been formed to help manage infrastructure needs such as streetscape improvements, rodent control programs etc., such as Clearwater Landing Community Association which helps maintain commercial zoning restrictions around clear water areas near Lake Okeechobee; Champions Pointe Association which manages properties along Champion Pointe Boulevard; Belle Glade Neighborhood Association which governs Belle Glade Drive; Colonial Heights Association which manages properties along Constitution Avenue; Lighthouse Pointe Association which manages properties along Light House Road; Seminole Heights Association which oversees property within Seminole Heights neighborhood

The first gun targets were created in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French artist and inventor. The targets were made from metal strips that could be bent to resemble human bodies. These early guns targets were used for training purposes only. Rifle practice began to become popular in the 1800s, and as such, more target objects became available. In 1807, John Browning designed his first rifle that could shoot multiple rounds per minute, which led to the development of shotguns in the 1850s. By 1870, all major firearms manufacturers had started manufacturing firearms with Multiple Rifled Barrels (MRBs).
Leesburg is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,634 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Leesburg was founded on October 6, 1881 by Captain John A. Gaffney and his wife Anna Landon Gaffney (née Freeman) as a small post office called "Leesborough." It was renamed to "Leesburg" on February 10, 1902 after General Ulysses S. Grant's visit to that city. On December 3, 1907, the post office closed due to lack of mail service; however it reopened on January 1st the following year under new management with Captain Edwin W. Seely as Postmaster and Mrs. Anna Landon Gaffney serving as first Female Postmistress. On July 4th, 1928 Leesburg became an incorporated community when it passed a vote to become an independent municipality with its own board of commissioners and mayor/council system similar to those in other surrounding communities such as Jacksonville and St Augustine.. In 1932-1933 LtCol Harry Jethro Gibbs served as Mayor/Councilman for Leesburg because he could not serve in the state legislature which was then in session at Tallahassee due to illness; he later became Congressman from Florida’s Third Congressional District from 1933-1935 and served again in that seat from 1939-1945 until his death in 1945 In 1938 Hurricane Hugo damage some homes but no main business did because most people were out of town visiting family or friends during this time . After hurricane Hugo many businesses started up like reedhauling yards and providing goods for local residents . On November 5th , 1949 Hurricane Andrew hit Leesburg killing all 12 people living there including Captain Edwin W Seely who had been Postmaster since 1907 After Andrew many businesses closed down because the storm made transportation difficult so many people just stopped working altogether or decided not to rebuild However few have left their mark on this beautiful little town like Capt E W Seely who played an important role during early years
In 1821, a group of entrepreneurs led by Colonel Robert H. Lee purchased a tract of land in what is now Leesburg, Florida. The area was then known as the "Leesettled Lands" and was named in honor of General Robert H. Lee and his wife, Martha Elizabeth Butler. In 1827, the town of Leesburg was founded on the site of present-day Leesburg. The first Post Office was established in 1827 and continued to serve until 1903. The town grew rapidly due to its location close to railroads and its easy access to agriculture, commerce, and education. By 1830, Leesburg had a population of 100 people and became an important center for trade with neighboring counties. In 1892, the town acquired its current name -Leesburg Township - after Congressman James Mollohan (D-Fla.) introduced a resolution naming it in honor of his late wife Eleanor Roosevelt.
