After the war ended, most aviation activity stopped as aircraft were converted into other uses such as law enforcement and troop transport. However, Leesburg continued to be used for agricultural purposes until the late 1990s when development began around two large shopping malls which are now known as Bayfront Park and State Fair Park. In recent years, much local development has been focused on businesses that serve food services such as Primitive Pantry but also new housing developments which have sprung up around Interstate 441 just east of town center. There has been some growth within Leesburg itself with several high-rise apartments being built between State Fair Park and Bayfront Park while more traditional single-family homes continue to be built throughout downtown area including near Interstate 441 exit 13A where there are currently several multi-million dollar homes being developed by developers looking to capitalize on its location close to I-4 exits providing easy access to Central Florida's largest urban area

Leesburg was founded in 1836 by James W. Lees and his brothers as a small town on the banks of the St Johns River. It grew rapidly, becoming a major center for citrus production and trade in Florida. The town was renamed Leesburg after General James W. Lees in 1881. In 1906, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of the city, killing over 100 people and leaving many others homeless.
