Leesburg is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leesburg was founded by Captain John Fauntleroy and his wife Martha on November 12, 1821. They named it after Leesburg Plantation in Virginia which they had visited while on their honeymoon. The Fauntleroys owned a plantation in present day Hillsborough County until 1848 when they sold it to Jno. Stephens and his family who renamed it "Stephens Island". George Washington Stephens descendants still live there today and run a tracts of land as well as leasing out homes to students from nearby Sanford High School and Orlando State University. The first post office was established in Leesburg on August 10, 1825; it was discontinued with the closure of the mail service in 1886. On January 1, 1902, Leesburg became one of three towns located within Kissimmee Township when that township was created from parts of Orange County and Brevard County. Leesburg retains its original name for all residents unless otherwise specified: "John Fauntleroy Settlement". According to the USGS website: "There are several theories about why this name change occurred – some say because people began using surnames more cautiously after John Fauntleroy's death (1824), others say because many early settlers were Englishmen who did not want their full namesakes known beyond their district (or town)…" In 1899–1900 an electric streetlight system replaced gas lamps throughout the community which remain operational today thanks to donations by current Mayor Jeff Kappelman and members of the Town Council effective January 1st 1999 through December 31st 2009 inclusive). On July 4th 1916 Leesburgh lost its status as a town when it merged with Sanford to form Kissimmee Township but reverted back to its original name on December 31st 2009 following an appeal by Mayor Jeff Kappelman.."

Leesburg first appeared on maps in 1836 as "Lakeland". It was named for General James Lees, who had purchased land there in 1825 from Captain John A. Ketchum and his family. In 1839, the townsite of Orange Grove was transferred to Leesburg and it became an incorporated village with a mayor and five trustees. The name change to Leesburg in 1898 when Lakeland merged with other Seminole County towns to form the newly created Brevard County. The first store in Leesburg opened on Main Street on December 1, 1899. The town’s first post office was established on May 10, 1903 by J.C. Boydell and Lillie Hefner (wife of Republican Party presidential candidate Samuel Mosely). In 1907-1908, the Town Building Committee built a new municipal building that still stands today on State Road 401E just east of town center. This building served as the headquarters for most local government until 1934 when it burned down during a storm which destroyed much of downtown Leesburg including many businesses and homes which are now part of nearby Sanford park off US 441A near Philips Avenue (now University Boulevard). In 1940-1941 Flood Control District No.(2) constructed two levee ditches across Lee River near present day US 441A/University Boulevard to control flooding caused by heavy rains along the Apalachicola River system that season; these works were also funded by proceeds from flood insurance premiums collected from residents within the boundaries of Brevard County at that time The post office continued open until 1965 when it closed due to lack of customers - however mail continued being delivered throughMechanicsville Post Office located one mile west/southwest of town limits until 1978 When that facility closed too too because Interstate 95 cut off access toBrevard County Mail Route #5 southbound thru Mechanicsville
