Leesburg is a small town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Augustine–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Leesburg began as a post office on December 12, 1871. It has been changed three times and its current name is derived from its location on the banks of the St Johns River: "Leesburg" means "Island in the river". Leesburg's history begins with its founding by Captain John Smith during the early 1800s as a trading post on an island in the St Johns River. Smith named his new settlement for General James Lees who had won a decisive battle against Creek Indians at Pensacola Bay in 1814 and became Lieutenant Governor of Florida under Governor Andrew Jackson. The first store opened in 1876 and along with other businesses soon developed around this initial commercial center which later became known as "The Village." By 1920, when it reached its present size it had become one of Southwest Florida's most important agricultural communities due to its fertile soils and abundant production of citrus fruit, cotton, corn, soybeans and other crops. During World War II much activity took place within Leesburg due to its strategic position as both an airfield servicing many Allied troops streaming into Southwest Florida during Operation Neptune's Spear (the invasion of South Korea), as well as providing warehousing for military supplies brought over by sea from Japan before that country's surrender. Particularly notable were two large ammunition dumps which functioned like giant warehouses until they were destroyed by fire in 1945; these onceagain illustrate just how productive an agricultural community could be when subject to constant wartime use. It wasn't until after Hurricane Ivan hitLeesburg on October 5th 2006 that locals finally woke up to what was happening outside their windows - power was out across much of Southwest Florida including their hometown! A day or so later crews arrived to find that all but one streetlight had been knocked out and then came news that trees had been removed from much of downtown - including several blocks north of where LEEBSBURG now stands! After four days without significant relief or repair work being accomplished anywhere near their town residents went onto strike effectively starting what would eventually become one of America's largest civil rights protests ever staged - against government inaction during a time when infrastructure needs were simply not being met! Ultimately more than 100 vehicles belonging to various agencies converged on downtown Leesburg while people waited inside polling places all day long only for things to get worse still 10 hours later when riot police made an appearance! Today Leesburg continues to play host to many local events such as golf tournaments and Oktoberfest Festival while also becoming increasingly popular among retirees looking for peaceful rural living experience minutes away from multiple shopping malls and beachfront resorts

Leesburg is a small town located in southern Florida. The name “Leesburg” was given to the community by Colonel James A. Lees, who purchased the land in 1836. The first settler in what is now Leesburg was John Pritchard. When Captain George Wilkinson landed on the island of Key West on July 17, 1821, he and his party were the only humans on what is now known as Leesburg Island. In 1834, an act of Congress established the county of Lee County within Miami County; however, it was not until 1868 that LEE COUNTY WAS FORMALLY CREATED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF FLORIDA AS A SUBDIVISION OF MASSACHUSETTS COUNTY. The first businesses in Leesburg were a store and post office open from November 3, 1830-January 6th, 1831. This store was operated by Jno Hatton and his son John Hatton II. Then came sawmills which started up around 1840 with Daniel Fowler as the first Operator and continued for many years until sold to Wm Gathercole about 1865-1867; also at this time there was a blacksmith shop next door (now part of First Baptist Church). With these beginnings came increased trade with nearby Fort Myers and Naples for goods brought overland from South America or from Cuba via Mexico City through Leesburg Pass into Florida proper! In 1850s additional businesses began to open up including three hotels: one by Captain Cushman called The Colonial; another by Captn John Bogue called The Belle Epoque Hotel; and still another by James Sikes called The Sphinx at 2nd Street corner Main Street where today you find several stores including hardware store Hardware Emporium & Bank which opened its doors in 1946! When World War I started America had just turned into a global superpower with involvement all over Europe but Little did we know then that our neighbour to the south would go headlong into World War II!!! In 1941 while most Americans were busy fighting overseas they left their homes behind to fight for country they never knew existed! That’s right ladies and gentlemen – LEE COUNTY FOUNDED THE FIRST ARMY BASE IN FLORIDA when General Omar Bradley set up headquarters at Camp Blanding near present day Hendry City!! And lest you forget our WWII stalwarts Sgt Joe Barbera (and Mrs Joe Barbera) who founded Miami Dade College back in 1949 after serving their country during WWII! It wasn’t just war related businesses that took off during this period but also professional ones such as law firms Kirby & Bartlett LLP being founded in 1944 followed later that year by Cousins Law Firmeston LLP both of which continue operates today! There have been other minor changes throughout these years such as when grocery store Grocery Outlet Inc..opened up on Airport Boulevard opposite US Airways Center back in 1984!? It didn’t stop there though but soon after LEE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLopened its doors enrollment had begun steadily increasing with students coming from neighbouring counties such as Broward & Palm Beach who wanted someplace closer to home so their children could attend school too! Today we have 4 high schools located within lee county: Pinecrest HS (northwest), Harbour View HS (southwest), Coconut Creek HS (southwest), and Hollywood Hills HS ( southwest)! Perhaps more importantly though are our continuing efforts towards economic development which has seen us develop numerous business ventures such as RE/MAX Realty Services Inc., Home Depot Co., Thrifty Food Mart etc.? All without forgetting those pesky mosquitoes !! As mentioned earlier LEE COUNTY WAS FORMALLY CREATED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF FLORIDA ON JULY 27TH 1918 AFTER MANY YEARS OF EFFORTS BY MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO INCREASE CONFEDERATE EXPANSION WITHIN MASSACHUSETTS COUNTRY THROUGH LEESBURG ISLAND AND OTHER AREA DESCRIBED BELOW?
