John Atkins for $1,000 cash and laid out a town on it named after him – Ledyardborough – that same year. In 1830, Masons built Fort George on an island off the coast of Leesburg to protect their new settlement against Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola. At first called Fort Walton Beach because only men could possess firearms there (the women were not allowed to carry them), the fort became known as Fort George due to its strategic location deep in Indian country and its strong defense against Seminole attacks during the Second Seminole War (1835-1838). A post office called Ledyardborough was established in 1833; it changed its name to Leesburg in 1840 after James Southerland donated land for a courthouse there and Commerce Street followed suit two years later.
