Leesburg is an unincorporated community in Lee County, Florida, United States. It is located on the north side of the Apalachicola River, about east of Pensacola and west of Tallahassee. The town was named for General James Lees (1785-1850), a Confederate general who served in the American Revolution and as a U.S. Representative from Georgia. Leesburg developed along State Road 98 (later US 98) between 1912 and 1916 when it became a truck stop on the route between Pensacola and Tallahassee. The first post office opened in 1912, and the name was changed to Leesburg in 1917. The railroad came through Leesburg in 1915; after that it declined until it was discontinued by Amtrak in 1971. In 1982, US 98 was widened to four lanes with an expressway running perpendicular to it; this enabled truck traffic to bypass Leesburg entirely and allowed development around what is now the small shopping center north of US 98. The south end of US 98 nears Apalachicola Bay so there is no need for a truck stop anymore but still some traffic uses it for local transportation needs

In recent years, Leesburg has become an important center for education with many schools located here including USF (University of South Florida), Hillsborough Community College and Kennedy Space Center Florida .
