Leesburg is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. It was founded by the Seminoles in 1836 as part of their relocation from Sanford, Florida. The population was 10,552 at the 2010 census. Leesburg is located on State Road 12 (SR 12) north of Daytona Beach and east of Fort Myers. Leesburg's history began with the arrival of white men in 1836. A post office called "Leesburg" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1886. In 1840, John Fenton built a small cabin near present-day Leesburg on what is now state road 12. By 1850, alledged Indian artifacts had been found throughout Lee County and it was decided to establish a fortification to protect settlers against possible attack by the Seminoles. The first fortification known as Fort Fenton was completed in 1851; it consisted of a stockade around a small square parcel of land which included the present-day schoolhouse and church. In 1861–1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Fort Fenton five times; each time they failed to take it by storm because Union forces arrived too late to impede their progress. On July 3rd 1865 an act of Congress authorized General George Buell to take possession of Mobile Bay for military purposes and ordered Fort Fenton closed; however its cannons still fired into nearby boats during dry season conditions until 1898 when new batteries were installed nearby that rendered them ineffective again The town center grew rapidly after World War II when many workers moved there from rural areas across Florida due to wartime shortages of labor skills such as engineering, construction materials and agriculture goods such as foodgrain storage tanks . Many businesses continue to be open today including convenience stores (Gordons), hardware stores (Moses Brothers), telecommunication businesses ( Spectrum Communications ), banks ( First National Bank ), restaurants (Johnny Rockets), doctor offices (University Hospital) and various other services . Some notable institutions that have located here include USF College – one of two universities in Lee County - United Methodist Church - which has been used as both a worship service location for local residents as well as hosting popular summer concerts since 1984 - Stetson University – considered one of America’s top law schools - Daytona Beach International Speedway – home turf for several NASCAR races over the years - Interbay Marina which offers boat rentals/boating excursions/fishing trips year-round while also housing art galleries/theatre productions throughout the year
In 1892, Leesburg was founded by Sanford S. Goodspeed and his wife Julia. The Goodspeed family developed the town around their farmstead in what is now the eastern part of Leesburg. Goodspeed built a small mill in the community, and he also opened a store for local residents. In 1907, Goodspeed moved the mill to what is now downtown Leesburg and began to sell flour, feed, shoes, and other products from his store. The mill continued to operate until it was destroyed by fire in 1935. Leesburg experienced significant growth during World War II. The community became an important supply center for the military due to its location close to several airfields. The town also played a major role in providing housing for soldiers and their families after the war ended. In 1951,Goodspeed donated land to make way for Interstate 95 which connected Leesburg with Daytona Beach. Since then, downtown has undergone many updates including a new library and post office building in 2006; as well as new residences on various blocks within walking distance of each other.
