Leesburg, Florida is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 902 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Leesburg" was given to the community by General James Lee during the American Revolution as a place where he could rest and recuperate from his travels. The original settlers were farmers and their families who arrived in 1837. They named their community after John Leesborough, 2nd Baronet of Cleveland in England who had been aide-de-camp to Sir Francis Drake on his English expedition against Spanish Honduras in 1795. On January 1, 1845, Leesburg became an incorporated municipality under Monroe County jurisdiction with a population of 581 people. On October 15 of that year, it merged with Sanford to form the Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area which has since grown to include all of Orange County and much of Seminole County including Leesburg Township (the only township within Monroe County). In 1998, Leesburg's annexation into Sanford made it one of six municipalities within Sanford that are not considered part of any county or metropolitan area but are instead under city control which gives them more power over planning and zoning than if they were within county boundaries. The first post office opened in LEEBSBURG on November 7, 1847; it closed on May 3, 1893 due to low mail volume and changed its name to LEESBURG after becoming an incorporated municipality. The first physician practicing medicine in LEEBSBURG was Drs Josephine Ayerst and George Huggins on September 4th 1865; they moved to Jacksonville before opening a practice there two years later at 221 Highland Avenue which remains the only medical building still standing in LEEBSBURG today (and also houses various businesses). Dr Ayerst is buried there along with her husband Dr John Gentry Ayerst (1822-1915) who founded Jacksonville University Hospital & Research Institute which now bears his name..
