Hager and A.F. Baxendale as a station on the Tampa-New Orleans Railway. The original name for the town was Estero de las Islas de Key West (Island of Keys). In 1926, the town changed its name to Leesburg after General James Wofford Lees who fought in the Mexican–American War and later became an American general in Cuba during World War II and played a key role in defeating Spanish forces at Santiago de Cuba. The first store in Leesburg opened in 1895 and soon there were several businesses operating within the town limits including grocery stores, dry goods stores, hotels/motels and banks (the first being First National Bank which opened on December 12th). Over time more businesses cropped up such as restaurants and bars but it would be until 1978 when David Lutz began working at his father’s restaurant/bar called The Nugget that would become one of the most successful establishments within Leesburg area over the years spending over 25 years before retiring from business in 2009. Leesburg was founded in 1824 by Captain John G. Lees as a small community on the banks of the Suwannee River. The town grew quickly, and by 1836 it had a post office, a schoolhouse, and three stores. In 1838, the first railroad was built through Leesburg, and soon it became an important trading center for farmers in the region. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee came to Leesburg to seek refuge from military imprisonment in Mobile County. Here he met local farmer James Hogg and his wife Julia, who became his fiancee. They married on July 12, 1861, at Stonington Presbyterian Church near present-day Jacksonville Beach. The Battle of Gainesville was fought on November 8th1861 near Leesburg as part of the First Alabama Campaign against the Confederacy. Union General Robert E. Lee led 7500 men against 11000 Confederate troops under Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest while these forces were blockading Fort Donelson in Tennessee. Although numerically superior (Lee's force numbered 3300 men while Forrest's numbered 7000), Lee's army was almost surrounded and surrendered at what is now known as "the Crater". This event helped boost Lincoln's popularity among southern Americans during the early days of his presidency; many felt that this victory demonstrated how well-organized and equipped Union forces were compared to those of Confederate Commanders such as Lee
