Lauderhill is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg– Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lauderhill" was derived from the Plantation of Lauderdale, which was located on what is now US-441 and FL-1 near present-day Lauderhill. The first Europeans to visit Lauderhill were Spanish moss collectors looking for plants used in paint. Captain John Stonington landed at what is now US-441 in 1696 while exploring the area after crossing the Florida Straits from Cuba. He named it Las Palmas de la Vega (Bay of Pigs). In 1727, French traders arrived in venture called La Rivière du Troubadour (River of Troubadour) with plans to establish a fur trading post south of Lake Okeechobee. They built Fort Moultrie on land that would later become part of Lauderhill. In 1827, James Kenedy founded Kenedy's Store and Warehouse here on current day US-441A east of downtown Lauderhill proper during his unsuccessful attempt to open a route from Tampa to Jacksonville via Mobile Bay. A year later he organized an agricultural society known as The Agricultural Society of Broward County (later Broward County Agricultural Society) which included parts of present day Polk and Hillsborough counties northwest thereof. In 1829 James Kenedy erected a three story brick store building on today's State Road 825 north sideof town square opposite old courthouse Square across Main Street between Floridashire Place east and westowned by Andrew Mellon family paper mills heirs who leased land back then along Railroad Tracks owned by brothers Edward Hagerty Sr., Ernest Hagerty Jr., Arthur Ewing together withFS Logging Co., also sold lots including partsnow Lee Everitts place east side next door where Dr Pepper bottling plant now standsand Henry Ford Pharma warehouse northeast corner lot adjoining Carnegie steel factory before main line railroad tracks &Now passenger cars run over intersection site On January 1st 1830 Rufus Putnam patented improvements to steamboats launched from Live Oak Harbor on Hillsborough River - Putnam Ferry Landing - thence down river Pearl Harbor Channel into Gulf Stream See patent # 7052 dated February 26th 1830 His ferry landing became known as Putnam Marina . Lauderhill has been a center of trade and commerce since it was founded in 1892 by missionaries from Hong Kong. The town grew rapidly during World War II as American soldiers stationed here engaged in combat or worked on munitions plants. After the war, Lauderhill became a major shopping and entertainment center for the region. Today, it remains an important cultural and economic center within its own community as well as a popular tourist destination. Lauderhill's history begins with several missionary families who arrived in 1892 to spread Christianity among the Native Americans living around Tampa Bay. In 1905, Chas Aiken donated land to make up what would become Lauderhill Village; this land included access to Clearwater River and two churches: First Presbyterian and Christ Episcopal Church (now Holy Cross Catholic) which both opened their doors to new converts that year. The name "Lauderhill" originated from one of Aiken's children who named his home "The Hill". By 1907, over 1,000 people had lived in Lauderhill Village and most of them were either African Americans or Chinese immigrants who had come to work on local cotton plantations during the late 19th century before those plantations were abolished in 1890 under pressure from white supremacists like Andrew Johnson following his appearance on national television supporting Reconstruction South America campaign promises made during his inaugural term as President of the United States In 1925 Chas Aiken sold parts of Lauderhill Village including present day Central Park to developer Edward Logue for $2 million dollars making it one of Hillsborough County’s first large-scale real estate transactions In 1933 future Mayor David Rossman purchased additional lands east of Central Park from Edward Logue totaling . He chose this location because he felt that central park would be too noisy for residents living near Central Park while also providing more acreage for development than any other site within Hillsborough County at that time Mayor Rossman dedicated Lauderdale Road/Central Park Drive (now US-1) as “David Rossman Boulevard” in honor of his predecessor In 1955 Drayton O'Leary purchased 380 acres northeast of central park from Mayor Rossman for $10 million dollars making him one of the largest landowners within City limits when he did so O’Leary intended to develop this land into a new city called Plantation Lakeside but instead he developed only about 10% of it due primarily to legal issues surrounding changes brought about by federal law known as Euclid Avenue v Tallahassee School District No 2 (later renamed Hillsborough Community College). This case determined that school districts not located inside municipalities could levy taxes without prior approval from adjacent municipalities such as Hillsborough Community College which ruled against Plantation Lakeside based on its incorporation into Tallahassee municipality
