Lauderhill was founded in 1885 by Dr. John Lauder and his wife, Margaret. The town was named for the Allegheny Mountains, which were located on the border of what is now Pennsylvania and Ohio. Dr. Lauder had come to Gainesville to work as a doctor and found a small community of farmers ready to begin anew after years of being bombarded with disease brought over by the Indians. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Lauder also developed a successful farm business that continues today. By 1900, Lauderhill had a population of approximately 2,000 people and was home to two schools, one public and one private. In 1915, Doctor John Lauder passed away but his widow continued running the family farm until her death in 1943. At that point, the property passed through several hands before it was acquired by George Wernham who built an experimental farm there in 1948-1949 known as Wernham Heights Farm Ltd.. during this time period many new subdivisions were created in what is now Lauderdale County including: Deerfield Park (now part of Miami), Lighthouse Pointe (now part of Fort Lauderdale), Lakeview Estates (now part of Coral Gables), Sunrise Terrace (now part of Hollywood) and Treasure Coast Estates (now part of Pompano Beach). In 1957, Wernham Heights Farm Ltd., along with other properties in Lauderdale County were sold to Jack Welch’s Pepsi-Cola company for $8 million dollars which at that time made it one of the most valuable assets in Florida history. Over time various changes have taken place at Wernham Heights Farm Ltd.: In 1984 it became known as ruination Row; 1986 it became Arboretum Road; 1990 - 1994 it reverted back to its original name - Paddock Ridge Farms LLC.; 1998 thru 2002 it changed again back again from Paddock Ridge Farms LLC.- current name is "Lauderhill". In 1978 Lauderhill opened its first mall - called "The Mall". This mall spanned over 6 acres and contained more than 100 stores including Sears, JCPenney and Macy's among others plus associated parking lots totaling around 1/3 acre which still remains today inside the mall complex! Today The Mall has been closed down due mostly to weather concerns but some sections have been used for office space or another development project outside the complex such as Southpark village located just east/northwest across I-95 from The Mall! It should be noted that while much has changed at The Mall since its inception nearly 100 years ago there are many familiar faces still living within walking distance including: Bob Evans restaurant; Burger King; Dunkin' Donuts; Taco Bell;; Shell gas station ; Belk store although these stores may no longer be open on all days due mainly to lack Of customers! In early 2001 local developer Greg Neely purchased all remaining portions of Arboretum Road from Mr. Welch for $325 thousand dollars making him sole owner thereof once again giving Lashbrook Township a senseof stability once again following lengthy negotiations between both parties! With Neely's purchase came new opportunities for redevelopment potential within Ardoretum Road itself including: plans for an arts center employing up unto 350 artists (!); possible developments into housing communities featuring luxury condos & homes spa tubs & whirlpools etc.; reclamation or renovation effortsrectional area renamed "Lauderhill Meadows" after Jack Welch himself who once resided there briefly during he ownership tenure preceding Greg Neely's acquisition? However despite these positive developments Lashbrook Township--and ultimately Lauderdale County--has seen mixed results over the last few years with some areas seeming poised for greatness while others continue struggling economically speaking especially given howarpetey Broward county has consistently outspent them handily lately...
