Lauderhill, Florida is a town located in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,994 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood area. Lauderhill was founded on September 12, 1892 by J.P. Lauder and his brothers John and George Lauder with $1,000 investment from their father. The town was named after Anthony Lauder who had purchased 8 acres of land in South Miami in 1885 to start a cattle ranching business which he called "Lauderdale". Lauderhill grew rapidly due to its location near Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale for passenger and freight transportation; as well as its corn- Processing Plant established in 1907 which became one of the largest employers in the community. The plant processed corn from local farmers until it closed in 1972. The post office was first opened on October 1, 1893 (renamed "Lauderhill" on November 3). By 1902 there were over 50 businesses in Lauderhill with a variety of manufacturing including clothing stores, breadmakers and druggists; several banks and two newspapers; an insurance company; a meatpacking company; two movie theaters (the RKO Studio Theatre Company's first showing took place on December 6th 1903); four professional sporting teams: the American Football League's Cleveland Bulldogs (now the Jacksonville Jaguars) and Pittsburgh Steelers (who played their first game at this stadium against Brooklyn Dodgers on January 7th 1923), as well as minor league baseball teams such as the Stonington Mets (now Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders), Pompano Beach Pelicans (now Miami Marlins) and Marathon Majors (later moved to Jupiter, FL). In 1953 Lauderhill annexed adjacent Sunrise Rancho Park making it one of only two towns in Broward County to do so – other being West Palm Beach which annexation followed suit twelve years later on May 9th 1960. As early as 1916 Drs James Humes MD & son Harry organized local sufferers of tuberculosis into an association known as “The National Tuberculosis Association” or THC before moving into their own building at 811 N US Highway 441st Street soon after opening day when they did not have any space available at home for their growing number of patients.– Humes also served concurrently during World War I with role model Dr Samuel Gridley who helped organize military nurses then returned home to work largely unassistedWWI while still caring for his sick family members back East In 1922 office moved cnr NW corner 2nd Ave & E 5TH St where Dr Harry built home now .
