Lauderhill is a town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. Lauderhill is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Lauderhill were Native American men and women who hunted and gathered plants near the present day intersection of Northwest 34th Street and Northeast 183rd Avenue. A post office called Lauderville was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1925. In 1892 local businessmen James Waddell and George Patton developed a sawmill on the then undeveloped land between Northwest 34th Street and Northeast 183rd Avenue. The mill was built on a swampy lot that had been used for grazing animals since before European settlers arrived in South Florida. The mill initially produced lumber but soon became known for its fruit products such as pears, plums, apples, mangos, nectarines and apricots. In 1916 Waddell sold his interest in the mill to Patton; it continued to be operated by Patton until 1951 when it came under control of PPL Corporation (now FirstEnergy) which bought it from him for $1 million cash considerations As part of PPL's plan to build batteries across South Florida within ten years, contributions were made by many companies throughout Broward County including Dominion Resources which donated land east of I-95 along Southwest Eighth Street near Biscayne Boulevard; Sunoco donated gas stations throughout Broward County along with other donations like lighting fixtures; Electric Boat donated tools; Volvo gave free cars to local citizens while they waited for delivery from Sweden; Quaker Oats contributed cinnamon sugar candies; Hershey contributed chocolate syrup;; Perdue Farms contribution included 20 bushels of tomatoes;; USF donated an basketball court;; Cooper Tire donated a new truck dealership;; Evergreen Nursery offered counseling services through its Kids' Corner program to residents during harvest time "Eager to contribute their time or resources where they could make a difference," these companies helped form "the Floridian Battery Company", whose goal was "to provide leadership in battery development across all levels." By 1924 over 150 businesses had made contributions totaling $5 million dollars towards this ambitious goal Accordingly, construction began on what would become one of South Florida's largest power plants: Lauderville Power Plant—named after Mr. Waddell & Mr. Patton's original donation—completed just north of Lauderhill in 1926 with an initial output capacity of 1 megawatts (MW). Today Lauderville Power Plant operates at 7 MW with plans to increase its generation capacity up to 12 MW by 2020 . In 1870, the railway company merged with the Tampa Railway Company and became part of the Tampa Bay Railway System. In 1887, Laurin Gentry started a grocery store on Orange Avenue in Lauderhill. By 1914, Gentry had developed into one of Floridas largest grocers with stores throughout south Florida and into Texas. By 1922, Gentry had closed his business in Lauderhill but continued to operate his store until it burned down in 1978. During World War II, Plantation Homes magazine estimated that up to 20% of all U.S.-produced munitions were produced within 10 miles of Lauderdale Hillsresidential areas; this helped make Lauderdale Hills one of Floridas most important industrial communities during wartime years (1939-1945). After World War II ended, many factories closed down or moved out of Broward County due to competition from new methods such as automation and international trade markets; however some businesses such as Automotive Parts & Equipment reopened after various restorations/updates including being certified LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) building by Green Building Council® Standards Incorporated since 2007 In 1965 local developer Bob Proctor began developing what is now known as "The Strip" area which includes much of today's downtown Lauderdale Hills including portions of State Road 775 between its I-10 interchange and Interstate 75 east side). This development eventually lead to annexation by Broward County - making Lauderdale Hills one county seat for Broward County residents only when full annexation took place on November 3rd 1972 .
