Lauderhill is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Lauderhill is one of two incorporated communities in Polk County and also includes unincorporated portions of Orange County and Osceola County. The name comes from a nearby plantation that was once owned by Sir John Lauder (1793-1858). Lauderhill was founded on November 11, 1892 by J.W. Lauder and his brother Julius; it may have been named for John Lauder's plantation in Scotland which had been abandoned for years prior to its purchase by the Lauders. In 1896, James Dickey opened a general store in what is now the heart of town. A post office called Park Hill was established there on February 14, 1897; it closed due to failure four years later. In 1915, an oil well was discovered near present-day Lauderdale Beach and production began soon after; this led to increased development around the well site including the erection of several frame houses that still stand today as part of downtown Lauderhill’s early history: One such house – No 4 – has since been replaced by a new building block known as “The Grove” which blocks off much of downtown from view while leaving open large areas facing east towards Interstate 5 & US 41 (today’s North Boulevard). During World War II, portable airfields were constructed within or adjacent to present-day Lauderdale Beach along I-5 west of town for use during the war effort; these included Curtis Field which served as Naval Air Station Jacksonville (later NAS Pensacola) and Fort Myers Army Airfield #4 which served both military purposes and local civilians untilactivated in 1946 when all USAF activity moved to Ocala AFB southward from north/central Fla., concurrent with creation of state government at Tallahassee under then Governor Lawton Chiles A total population estimate for 1940 put Lauderdale Hills at 10%of Polk county's population but grew rapidly following WW2 thru annexation of adjacent Osceola & Orange Counties
Lauderhill was founded in 1887 by German immigrants, who named it after the city of Lübeck, in northeastern Germany. The community grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, and in 1912 it incorporated as a municipality. In 1923, Lauderhill became a county seat, and it has remained that way since then. In 1951, the first comprehensive master plan for Lauderhill was drawn up by planners at the City-County Planning Commission. The plan called for an expansion of the town to include more than 1,500 homes and businesses on two square miles (4 km2). However, due to budgetary constraints, this expansion never came to fruition. However, there have been various efforts over the years to bring about changes within Lauderhill itself. In 2002, residents levied a proposal for a new library in downtown which would have allowed for much-needed public access to materials related to local history and culture. After several failed attempts at fundraising through online platforms or even selling tickets to an event that took place outside of town limits (the event itself being cancelled due to lack of attendance), supporters managed to pull off what is thought as one of the most successful fundraisers in recent memory –raising over $60,000 from locals and visitors alike!
