Lauderhill is located on the banks of the Miami River and has a rich history dating back to 1914 when it was founded as one of many small towns along this riverbanks. The name "Lauderhill" comes from a Spanish word meaning " romantic valley ". In 1916, Stephen J. Lauder, an American businessman and developer who also owned The Herald Tribune newspaper in New York City, purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) south of downtown Miami and began to develop it into what is now known as "The Meadows". He named his development "Lauderhill" after himself and his wife's home town of Laurier, Ontario where they had vacationed during their honeymoon. In 1940, Dr. Julius Rosenwald developed Hollygrove Estate near present-day Lauderhill for use as a research station for then-UCLA Medical School's newly established Department of Genetics; its first faculty members were Drs. Lewis Terman and Jane Goodall. In 1957 Drs. Lew Wasserman (founder of Universal Pictures) and Abraham Shriver bought property adjacent to UCLA's main campus on Broward Boulevard in Hollywood Hills for their new Institute for Molecular Biology which later became University Park Circle; here they started work on developing Bakelite technology which would soon enabled television broadcasters such as CBS Radio Corporation to create commercials without being interrupted by live programming or sound effects
