Lauderhill was founded in 1867 as an agricultural community on what is now U.S. Route 27A (now State Road 98A), north of Tampa and east of Clearwater. The name "Lauderhill" came from David Lauder, an early settler who had purchased property there in 1864 for $1,000 cash and turned it into a corn farm with 7 buildings including a house and barn. In 1925, Lauderhill incorporated as a village under the name of "Edgewater". In 1933 it changed its name to "Lauderhill", after fellow Collier County village of Lauderdale which had been renamed by the same process two years earlier. The first post office was opened in 1870 and remained open until 1959; the last post office closed on July 15, 1959. It has been reported that during World War II Lauderville Army Airfield—the only airbase within miles of Lauderhill—served as an important staging ground for Allied bombardment operations against Japanese positions in central Florida; however no evidence exists to support this claim. In 1941 construction began on Fort Myers Beach Municipal Airport approximately 5 miles northwest of town; this airport served as their primary landing/ takeoff site for military aircraft operating out of Fort Myers Naval Base until its closure in 1972 due to budgetary reasons. Lauderville also served as homeport for NAS Stennis from 1942-1976 when it became part of NAS Miami/Dade City; both installations were eventually reactivated at NAS Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickory (JBPH-H) nearby in 1998 and again from 2006-present day.. There are now no active military sites within range or commuting distance of either city limits while Ft Myers Beach Municipal Airport still serves primarily local aviation needs..The land currently used by Fort Myers Beach Municipal Airport is located just northeast corner off US 27A just south side near intersection with SR 98A
