Lauderhill is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lauderhill was founded in 1887 by Daniel Lauder and his family as a farming community on . A post office was established in 1888, and the name was changed to Lauderhill in 1912. In 1928, the community became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor-Council system. In 1959, it merged with Kissimmee to form the current city of Orlando. The oldest settlers were white men who arrived from Georgia in 1827 and 1830s. They built homes on land that would become Lauderhill. The first post office operated from 1887 until 1912 when it moved to Sanford which at that time also served as the county seat for Polk County. In 1928, Lauderhill became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor-Council system when it annexed parts of Kissimmee which at that time also included part of Lake Park and other smaller communities east of Sanford near where US Highway 4 crossed State Road 98 (SR 98). In 1959, it merged with Kissimmee to form the current city of Orlando when all but one municipality within Polk County elected to become one under state law passed during the same year referendum passage resulting from then-Gov. Jeb Bush's efforts to consolidate local governments throughout Florida due to budget problems plaguing many states at that time Congress had not approved any new laws authorizing municipalities within individual states since 1938 despite attempts by Govs Reagan and Bushes both times successively including passage of such legislation 21 years earlier despite opposition by Democratic majorities both times). Today Lauderdale Hills still has its own Mayor-Council government with five members elected directly via plurality vote rather than election by district like most major municipal governments across America even though its population now eclipses 2 million people making it one of America's "mega cities."
