Lauderhill, Florida is home to one of the most famous gun sights in the United States. The Everglades Gun Sight is a 25-acre site that features more than 260Gunsight targets representing all types of firearms. This NRA Heritage Award winner was first set up in 1959 and has since been used by thousands of shooters from around the world. The Gunsight was originally designed as a training ground for snipers and riflemen during World War II. It quickly became known as one of the most popular sites in America for target shooting, thanks to its natural location and wide variety of target objects available. Today, it’s also home to an NRA program called “The Challenge” which allows people from all walks of life to take part in 12-hour shoot sessions at the Gunsight.

Lauderhill, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 137,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. In 2008, Forbes magazine listed Lauderhill as one of "The 50 Most Beautiful Small Towns" in America. Lauderhill was founded by Captain John Lauder (1795-1868) and his brother James on July 1, 1824 as a stop on the old Haines Road between Fort Myers and Naples. Captain John Lauder built a Log Cabin cabin about two miles west of present day Lauderhill on what is now known as Meadowbrook Lane. He named the settlement after his father'sSir John Lauder (1771-1851), an experienced soldier and planter who had born in Scotland and established himself in South Carolina before moving to North America where he became a general landowner and settler in what are now Monroe County (Georgia), Alachua County (Florida), Levy County (Iowa), Escambia County (Alabama), Walton County (Ohio), Franklin County (Indiana) and Broward County(Florida). By 1840 Captain John Lauder had laid out three townships: Garden City, Centreville/Nohant Manor, and Stanton Heights/Almond Hill along with over 100 stores, 30 homesites for cattle or hogs, 40 public houses including five inns/ taverns/majors etc., schools to include Ladies Academy & Female Grammar School; four churches viz St Andrews Anglican churchyard [now part of Coral Gables], First Presbyterian Church [now part of Weston Village], Methodist Episcopal church [now part of Kendall Village] - all served by Sabbath school teachers; seven sawmills; six gristmills; four tanneries; one cigar factory." The first store opened at 908 Meadowbrook Lane on November 17th 1825 by Isaac Head from New York City under the name "Head's General Store". The first post office opened at this location on October 10th 1830 by Major Moses Brownell from Boston Massachusetts with initial mail being sent to Fort Myers via horseback then wagonloads until 1849 when horses were replaced by mules which led to increased postage costs so Orange Post Office was reopened on May 15th 1850 with mail still going via horseback until 1861 when mules were again used for postal service until electric delivery became available. In 1860 Captain John Lauder sold all his land within town limits except for someownedby himandhis brother James to Colonel Prentice who erected a millrace immediately east of town line forming today's intersection of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard / Highways A1A & US 41 near Brooks Air Force Base carrying retail traffic into town Limits while also providing power for local uses including a small water tower soon afterward erected northeast of town line just south Of current day I-Rockefeller Drive Northeast corner road running side Roads parallel To Gulfstream Avenue.(See map above). The first sighting devices used to aim firearms were the globes and pointers. These devices consisted of a metal or wood disk with an inscription or design etched on it, which was held in the hand by the shooter and aimed at a target. The earliest known designs were developed in China in the 3rd century BC. In 1847, Captain George Stephenson submitted a report to Parliament proposing that cannons be fired from vessels by means of a system of telescopes mounted on yards along the top of the Entering Bridge over London River. This system would permit sailors to see targets way up high and avoid hitting them with their cannonballs thus increasing firepower while reducing casualties. In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel Francis Dunster submitted his Report on Gun sights which advocated for improvements in sight equipment including adjustable turrets and peepers for rifles and pistols. This report helped spur development of modern rifle sights during the late 19th century.

Lauderhill is one of the most affluent communities in South Florida and has been called "the wealthiest community in America". The original name for Lauderhill was "Lake Worth" after the nearby Lake Worth Resort which opened in 1925. The first residents of Lauderhill were farmers who came to this area from western Maryland in 1884. In 1907, A&P grocery store began operations on Everglades Boulevard and soon became one of South Florida's largest retailers with stores located throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Other large businesses that quickly followed include Sears Roebuck & Company (1928), American Oil (1930), Kress Corporation (1935) and Overland Rubber Company (1945). In 1957, Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport opened as part of a larger airport system being developed by then-prime minister John F Kennedy. JFK had purchased land south of University Parkway east of Coral Gables for what would become JFK International Airport; when he died in 1963 his heirs sold the airport toBroward County for $26 million. Because it was within county limits at that time, no property taxes were levied on airport users until 1990 when they were raised to pay for new roads and other infrastructure projects inside the airport boundaries.
