Lauderhill is a city located in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 83,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. Lauderhill was founded in 1914 and is named for Edmund C. Lauder, a developer and founder of Sunbeam Radio Corporation who also donated land to the city. In 1918, Lauderdale County became part of what would become South Florida; however, all remnants of Lauderdale County were eliminated when Palm Beach County was created in 1924. The first guns were made in Lauderhill by gunsmiths and leatherworkers who had access to firearms brought over from Europe by American soldiers during World War I. By 1923, gunsmiths had developed a particularly good way to make pistols with fixed triggers that operated on cocked mechanisms called "automatic pistols." These pistols quickly became popular among law enforcement officers and militia members throughout the 1920s and 1930s because they could be fired automatically without having to hold down the trigger until the magazine was emptied. In 1940, former Mayor Harry Hays donated Marlin rifles (the same rifle used by John Lennon) to local police departments around town as gifts for service during World War II. This began an era where Law Enforcement Officers could own guns which would remain with them through out their careers – something that is still possible today! Lauderhill was founded in 1905 as a small community near the mouth of the Gables Creek on "The Point" peninsula. The first post office was established in 1911; it closed in 1951. It reopened as a postal processing center in 1957 and remained so until 1990. In that year, it became an incorporated city under its own government with a mayor and councilor system. Today, Lauderhill is one of South Florida's most populous cities with over 50,000 residents and more than $500 million in economic activity generated by businesses within its boundaries. Its downtown core has been renovated several times since 2000 to include new shopping malls, office buildings and hotels, while also restoration of some older structures dating back to 1906 and earlier. The community grew rapidly thanks to its excellent schools, fertile land, and convenient location on Florida's Gulf Coast. In 1892, the Lauderhill Tornado struck the town and killed fourteen people. It is also considered one of the worst natural disasters in Florida history. After the tornado, Lauderhill experienced rapid growth and development thanks to new housing developments, shopping malls, and restaurants that drew shoppers from all over Florida. In 2002, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea became an incorporated municipality within Lauderdale County and took on many of the same functions as Lauderdale Hills did before it - including being home to municipal government services such as police and fire protection - but also retains its local identity as a bedroom community for South Broward County residents looking for quality living close to great beaches.
Lauderhill was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1819 and named for him. It became a town in 1838 and it had a population of about 2,500 people. In 1907, Lauderhill annexed the neighboring town of Miami Beach. Finally, in 1912, Lauderhill separated from Miami Beach to become its own municipality.
