In 1906 it became an incorporated municipality and in 1960 it became an unincorporated community withinbrowardcounty. In 2000, it annexed part of Maitland and its 2005 population was 20,979 people. The name Lauderhill comes from John Lauder who settled thereabouts in 1892 with his family. He leased land from the Spanish colonists for £1 per year and built a house thereon which he called "The Meadows". A post office called "Lauderdale" was established in 1896 but failed to gain much popularity because no one wanted to deliver mail to an unincorporated community located close to Fort Lauderdale proper! So Lauderhill Eldridge Post Office Was established November 3rd 1886 by Wm H Eldridge(Dnvr) with Fannie E(Wife Of Jno S Eldridge) as First Lady And Mrs Jno B Pritchard As Second Lady.(See also: History of Broward County) A store opened on December 25th 1902 by Myron Crouch at 159 N US-14 (now Sunrise Blvd.) which became known as The Gilded Cage until 1903 when Harry Kapp bought the store and renamed it The Kessler Store after his father-in-law Jacob Kessler who had been instrumental in helping get Lauderhill incorporation status.(Kessler Store Inc.) By 1907, both stores were closed due to heavy competition from local retailers including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Federated Department Stores and other department stores that had moved into Sunrise Boulevard during that time period.(History of Lauderdale County) In 1909/10 Omar Bradley - then Mayor of Ft Lauderdale - approved plans by developer Edward Ladd for two high rise buildings at 615 N US-14 (now Sunset Blvd.), one being used as the first branch library for Broward County government and the other becoming county jail; these buildings remain today (at 615 N US-14 corner Playfair Ave.) Now home to Park Embankment mall where IMAX screens multiplexes like AMC Montage Place while also housing several restaurants.(Lauderhill Development Company LLC v Orlando City Football Club et al ) In 1912 construction began on what would become known as “The Plaza” development consisting of 5 interconnected blocks containing 80 individual homes – some having top floor apartments overlooking downtown – each priced between $2,500 and $8,000(Federated Department Stores). This project remains one of South Florida’s most lavish Atlantean structures today with its impressive ironwork balconies lining Flagler Avenue leading down below towards Government Center Tower visible from any location within or without Park Embankment mall……….Formerly known as: The Plaza Buildingformerly One Herald SquareOn February 9th 1916 local paper The Sun reported that James Dolan had purchased 100 acres south along State Road 7S east of downtown for $3 million dollars creating what would later be know as “ entitlements” or undeveloped land adjoining state road 7S which at present day forms Gore Road just north of Cross Keys Village Shopping Centre…..This purchase allowed him access not only to all future annexation properties adjacenttostate road 7S but also rights over any watercourse crossings available through this tract…..When restrictions were placed upon Mr. Dolan’s activities byBrowardCounty government following the county’s purchase thereof his land reverted back underDeveloper control subject however thereto continued use by himself free from all encumbrances resultingfromtheever since existing Restrictions against Growth etc.). Lauderhill is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Lauderhill were white men who came to this area by way of Key West and Fort Myers in 1837. They named their new community after Sir John Lauder, 1st Baronet (1795–1868). The first post office was established in 1838 and was called simply "Lauderhill". In 1845, the name was changed to "Mandalay". In 1902, it became a city. In 1912, Mayor Fenton Hoyt proposed annexing neighbouring unincorporated areas which included parts of Broward County. A referendum approved annexation by 67% to 33%. However, due to objections from some residents who felt they had not been given an equal voice in the decision-making process, Mayor Hoyt revoked annexation on October 12th 1913 and re-negotiated with Broward County commissioners On October 15th 1914 a second referendum approved annexation by 54% to 46%. This vote solidified jurisdiction over Lauderhill within Broward County as well as starting what would be a long affiliation between Lauderhill and Broward County government. On December 3rd 1915 Hurricane Felix struck the area damaging most homes but no injuries occurred; this event marked the beginning of continuous hurricane season AVG weather conditions that have prevailed annually since then - good news for tourism promoters! When World War II began on September 2nd 1939 many people left for military service but when war ended on August 14th 1945 all those who had left returned home including many women who had gone into workforce roles during wartime years such as making munitions or working at plants near Miami Beach . After World War II there were surges ofillegal immigration from Latin American countries because demand for labor increased following economic recession whileCWU limits lasted until 1965 limited US citizens working abroad permanently
